Well,
I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. Somebody very high
on the priority list around here (the ISD Supt, in fact :) bought a NEW
computer with the world's crappiest OS on it: M$ Winders '95.
So, I'm now faced with the necesity of getting this thing networked in
our Linux environment. We have been doing a LOT of C/SLIP with M$ WFWG;
it's very stable, works really well; in fact, for a small slow PC it's
probably the best way to get on our network.
I've managed to set up the PPP daemon on our modem server, and can get
the comm link established without much trouble; the problem comes when we
start using network applications. Here's the pathology:
Telnet programs (take your pick which one) all exhibit the same behaviour:
they work until one of the troublespots are encountered:
Answering Yes or No to any prompt from PINE; executing a ps -axe; or
cat-ting any file without using less. Then the terminal screen freezes
tighter than a frogs arse. The comm link remains intact and effective; I
can use the same app to telnet somewhere else in a different window.
So I know the comms link is not the prob (I guess). Which brings up
another point: When using the telnet app to telnet to another unix host
off site (a DEC Alpha using the DEC UNIX, I forget the designation), the
programs that lock us up locally work fine.
The other half of the problem is on the web: certain sites we can access
just fine (Altavista, Yahoo, Lycos, etc) while other parts go into a
seemingly infinite delivery of a page (home.netscape.com & our local
website).
These things are a real pain; anyone with any insight into this matter
gets to be my hero for the day.
Thanks in advance-
-James
