plip and parallel printers

When I try to config the kernel for both plip and parallel printer I can
get one or not the other. I have two parallel ports is there any way to have both
plip and a parallel printer.
How do I tell the system I want to use a bidirectional port (mode 1)
vs mode 0?
If these are Faq questions please point me to the proper faq or users
group.
