Hmm.. I didn't ever try ifconfig alias, and do actually not have any use
for it as my linux machine is more or less isolated. But if it does
what I expect it to do, and makes multiple dummy interfaces obsolete, I'd 
expect it to make the dummy interface obsolete at all as you could just alias
loopback. Or would this cause some weird problem with netmasks?
