I had been reluctant posting to a Linux list about IRC, but here goes...
Undernet places a bot (an automated script) on the channel to keep it
open. Which is fine, but you end up with tons of channels with 1 user in
them (the bot) in the list.
I wrote a special server for AnotherNet that connects to the network and
handles channel 'registration' without the need for the channels to be
'open.' This server keeps a database of registered channels and ops
users when they join. If a non-operator joins a registered channel for
the first time, they are 'deopped.'
I'll spare the rest of the server's abilities seeing as this really
doesn't belong on this list.
