proxy and www questions

Hi all. Could someone point me to the right documentation that would
help me with a proxy question? My problem is that our ISP has set up an
interlock that does the proxying, but the rest of our network is NIS, and
does not interact with the NIS passwd databases. I think it is that I
need a basic understanding of proxy and what function cern's httpd with
proxy capability gives me.. Hope this makes sense.
One other thing.. Can someone explain to me the difference between UDP
broadcast and unicast?
