Thanks for your help, at home I am running slip at 296.
My problem however is my NE2000 card here at the university pool.

I tried:

- re-enabling ne2000-safety options in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/ne.c
- newer kernels (up to 1.3.91)
- physical problems with out ethernet (well, maybe, but linux 1.2.13 works)
- newest (non-developper) libc
- compiling ncftp myself
- some other things I do not remember right now...

So I guess the problem is either in

the kernel net-code
  *or* (rather unlikely)
the distribution I am using (jurix by Florian La Roche)
