Use in route command

Could someone explain the meaning of the Use field in the Kernel
routing table. I have one properly functioning host that increments
the USE field in the default row by one, each time route is run. My
second non-working host ( I suspect a routing problem) increments
that Use field by 36 each time. Loopback field on the good is always
zero, on the bad always 12.
