The first thing to do is make sure your kernel has support for the 
network card built in.  You can tell it does if the card is 
recognized during bootup.  

The next thing I did when I got this problem was to double check that 
my hosts, and network cards were correct.  You can also check 
ifconfig to see how the card is being setup.....
