I have solved the problem by moving through the installation
instructions for yp in reverse order, undoing what was done to bring the
Linux box up as a yp client. It turns out that I had not removed the
"nis" entry in /etc/host.conf, thus instructing the resolver library to
use nis first in name and address resolution, followed by "files", then
"bind".

I removed the reference to "nis", and the RPC messages vanish.

Thank you for your consideration.
