Smaller MTU gives you better line sharing and responsiveness. 296 is the
traditional 9600 baud SLIP mtu, 576 is normally a better choice. Also if
you have a SunOS host to talk to it will send 576 byte frames down its own
slip interfaces unfragmented even if the MTU is set to 296....
