We experienced that problem with Novell 4.1 until about kernel 1.3.70 or
so (I can't remember exactly what version). Lately, we haven't had
any problems writing to Novell volumes for directories that have both
read and write permissions. However, we experience the same behaviour
as you for directories that are write only (ie. things like dropboxes,
etc.) so unfortunately we can't use Linux (yet!) for depositing files
into users' dropboxes.
