1.3.62 & EtherPower (PCI) - hangs

Running a P90, 32MB, PCI system, with a 3c509 as eth0 and an SMC
EtherPower as eth2.
The device driver for the EtherPower card is aware of disconnecting the
cable from the ethernet card. If one does this, a message appears, and
soon afterwards, the machine will hang completely.
Is there a fix.
