Can anyone help?

I am using kernel 1.3.20 (Slackware 3.0 distribution) and trying to set
my box up as a slip server using ``sliplogin''. I have configured slip
in the kernel along with dummy networking (I am not on an ethernet.)

Everything works fine up to what I believe is the beginning of slip
negotiation when I get kernel messages that say:

Jan 4 12:12:54 acp /sliplogin[485]: attaching slip unit sl0 for Sdennis
Jan 4 12:12:54 acp kernel: ERROR 'sl0' busy and not MOD_IN_USE.

This suggests I need a lodable module but boot messages say:

Jan 4 15:12:51 acp kernel: SLIP: version 0.8.3-NET3.019-NEWTTY (dynamic
channel s, max=256) (6 bit encapsulation enabled)
Jan 4 15:12:51 acp kernel: CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the
University of California

All the documentation I have sheds zero light on this. What am I missing?

Thanks -- Jay
