Gnu-tar and /etc/rmt: tar cvf remote:file fails

Hi all,
I was trying to use Gnu-tar from an HP-UX machine and Linux /etc/rmt together.
The tar -c option seems not to work for remote files because the O_CREAT flag
to open() is coded numerically differently on both systems.
So, is this intended? Any help appreciated ...
