Pacific HiTech's Linux Monthly CD-ROM
With the hundreds of megabytes of turnover each month on the Linux
mirrors, people complain that CD-ROMs were quickly going out of date.
We think we've found a solution by only releasing one CD-ROM, but doing
it every month. When a new version of GCC or XFree86 comes out you can
be sure it'll appear on the next disk. We don't have to waste space by
trying to cram everything on every disk--we can be more selective and
listen to what our users want in a montly update.
In fact, we're interested in distributing any popular Linux files. Having
trouble downloading that 50-meg file from the net? Interested in seeing
linux for the Alpha or other platform? Let us know, and if there's enough
demand we'll include it on the next disc.
A few Highlights:
Linux 1.2.13 and 1.3.17
XFree86 3.1.2
Slackware 2.3
Slackware Elf-Beta (unsupported)
Ptolemy 0.5.2p1
GCC 2.7.0
Here's a look at the heirarchy of the disc:
most-wanted/ Files People have Requested (This will be a Regular)
Incoming/ Files so Hot that they haven't been classified yet
apps/ Large useful packages and programs for Linux
browse Command to start up the arena browser and view the docs
ALPHA/ Software and Patches in the ALPHA Stage
X11/ Clients, servers and Etc. for XFree86
GCC/ GNU C and C++ Stuff
devel/ Linux Development Tools
docs/ documents and information about Linux
games/ Two words.... TIME WASTERS
je/ Japeneese Extensions
kernel/ Kernel Releases (souce and patches)
libs/ Special (non libc) linking libraries
slackware/ slackware 2.3
slackware@/ shortcut to slackware's disk sets
start.html Info about the disc
system/ Stuff to help you run your system
utils/ Useful Utilities
view/ Arena and setup files
00readme/ text version of start.html
slackware-elf-beta/ The totally unsupported slackware elf-in development
We are not sure how to classify this product. It is more than just a
"One disk Set" because it is updated monthly will all new stuff, four
monthly disks are better than any four disk set because no two issues have
the same stuff on it. The next issue won't have an older (or the same
copy) of something on the last one.
Already Planned for the next issue:
(Updated Daily on http://www.pht.com/cd-roms/linuxmonthly.html)
* Newest Linux kernels
* Slackware ELF (Hopefully still not Beta)
* Perl5
* Python
* IBCS (There have been a lot of requests for this one)
* Dosemu
* Wine
* Xpilot :)
* Recent Uploads to Sunsite & tsx-11
* Anything else YOU ask for!
