Jan. 31, 2014 - Riot police face barricades in central Kiev, Ukraine.APKIEV,
Ukraine Ukraine's embattled president has signed a bill offering amnesty
to protesters on condition that demonstrators leave government buildings
they have occupied. The opposition did not support that bill, accusing President
Viktor Yanukovych of taking demonstrators as hostages. It insists that protesters
must be freed without any conditions. The law was aimed at defusing a
two month-long political crisis, in which protesters have called for Yanukovych's
ouster.
SALT LAKE CITY Parents say about 50 elementary students in Salt
Lake City had their school lunches thrown out because money was owed
on their food accounts. The lunches costing about $3 were taken from the
children on Tuesday as they arrived at a pay station after cafeteria
workers had given them the food.Parent Erica Lukes said the action was
humiliating and demoralizing for students. The Salt Lake City School District
said the move came after it realized a lot of students at
Uintah (Yoo-IN-tah) Elementary owed money for previous lunches.District
spokesman Jason Olsen said cafeteria servers were not able to see who
was in debt until lunches had already been given to students in
line.He said the lunches were thrown out because they couldn't be served
to another student. Students whose lunches were taken away were given fruit
and milk.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">RAMALLAH, West Bank Palestinian activists are protesting to stake a claim
to a part of the West Bank whose final status is in
dispute in U.S.-mediated peace talks with Israel.Hundreds of protesters
went Friday to the site of Ein Hiljeh, a Palestinian village in
the Jordan Valley abandoned after Israel captured the land from Jordan in
the 1967 Mideast war. Activists claim the residents were forced to leave.Israel
and the Palestinians have been squabbling over the fate of the strategic
Jordan Valley. Israel wants to retain a security presence there even after
a peace deal is reached, citing security concerns. Palestinians reject any
Israeli presence there.Activists said the Israeli military set up barriers
to stop more activists joining. The military said they are investigating
the report.
FLORENCE, Italy Police on Friday found Amanda Knox's ex-boyfriend near
Italy's border with Slovenia and Austria, hours after he and the American
student were convicted for a second time in the death of British
student Meredith Kercher.Raffaele Sollecito's lawyer, Luca Maori, said his
client was in the area of Italy's northeastern border because that's where
his current girlfriend lives, and that he went voluntarily to police. However,
the cabinet chief of the Udine police station, Giovanni Belmonte, said police
showed up at about 1 a.m. Friday at a hotel in Venzone,
a tiny town of 2,200 about 40 kilometers from the border, where
Sollecito and the girlfriend were staying. They brought him to the Udine
police station, took his passport and put a stamp in his Italian
identity papers showing that he cannot leave the country, as mandated by
the appeals court in Florence.Since the court didn't order Sollecito detained,
he will be freed as soon as the paperwork is completed, Belmonte
said. He said Sollecito was calm and came willingly to the station,
with his girlfriend driving behind.Asked if police thought he might have
planned to flee the country, Belmonte said: "We don't know his intentions."
But he said police were tipped off to his presence in the
hotel and came immediately. In Italy, adults checking into hotels must hand
over ID upon check-in. Hotels are then required to communicate the information
to local police. The court in Florence on
