Communications Audiovisual Office (ECPAD) shows French soldiers patrolling
the Mettatai region in northern Mali. The Security Council unanimously approved
a new U.N. peacekeeping force for Mali on Thursday, April 25, 2013
to help restore democracy and stabilize the northern half of the country
which was controlled by Islamist jihadists until a France-led military operation
ousted them three months ago. (AP Photo/ECPAD, Arnaud Roine)The Associated
PressPARIS France's defense minister is in Mali to prepare the post-war
period after most French soldiers leave, to be replaced by African troops
and U.N. peacekeepers.A Defense Ministry statement says Jean-Yves Le Drian
arrived in the Malian capital of Bamako on Thursday and plans visits
with political figures and French troops who intervened on Jan. 11 and
have knocked out fortified bases of radical jihadists in the north.About
200 tons of munitions and arms have been seized and "the capacities
of these groups have been considerably reduced," according to the statement.Le
Drian's visit comes as the U.N. Security Council approved a peacekeeping
force for Mali, which will hold presidential elections in July.At year's
end, 1,000 French troops will still be in Mali, compared to around
4,000 now.

On the way home he insisted on sharing his peanut butter and
honey sandwiches with me and the chief-of-staff, Andy Card. The sun had
started setting as we left to return to the White House and
we talked just like friends do he asked me all about
my family, travels, pets and goals. I remember every moment of that
night including the orange and pink sunset that lasted the whole
flight. Another time he howled when I told him how my mom
had asked me about my first week at the White House, and
how Id told her all about how great it was and how
Karl Rove had been so nice and helpful to me, and how
he was just so smart and how happy I was to be
at the White House.when I broke to take a breath my mom
said, Who the hell is Karl Rove? Every week he held a
secure video conference either with Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki or Afghan
President Karzai, and I learned from his strong but gentle guidance of
them always respectful, firm, encouraging and non-condescending. I noted
that even behind closed doors, President Bush strongly, ably and graciously
defended America. He used to catch my eye during policy meetings and
tip me a wink with a little smile as we had noticed
when Vice President Cheney had been resting his eyes. Then wed share
a laugh realizing once again that it was clear the VP had
heard every word. President Bush treated my dad like the king of
England when he came for a state dinner as if his

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> Fox News Poll: 40 1093escribe nations debt as 'crisis'Voters say it is
more important to continue funding Social Security and Medicare at their
current levels than to reduce the federal deficit. Yet more than half
also think tax increases should not be considered during the current round
of budget negotiations, according to a new Fox News poll.Given those views,
it's unsurprising that more voters disapprove (53 percent) than approve
(39 percent) of President Obama's proposed budget, which includes both reductions
to entitlement program benefits and tax hikes on upper-income Americans. The
split is not entirely along party lines. Nearly a third of Democrats
give the president's budget plan a thumbs down (62 percent approve, 31
percent disapprove). The sentiment is even stronger on the tax issue.Since
taxes rose in January, a 55-percent majority of voters says tax increases
should be off the table for the next budget deal. Most Republicans
feel that way (68 percent), but so do many Democrats (42 percent). At
the same time there is a clear consensus that debt is a
concern. Four in 10 voters describe the nation's debt situation as a
crisis, and more than 8 in 10 see debt as a major
problem (43 percent), if not a crisis (40 percent).CLICK TO VIEW THE

and Medicare programs funded at their current levels over reducing the deficit. On

terms, President George W. Bush -- the only man to attain the
presidency by virtue of a Supreme Court ruling and only the second
son of a president to also serve as president -- was nursing
an approval rating around 30 percent.Four years later, however, public opinion
has turned slowly but steadily in the former presidents direction. A nationwide
Fox News poll conducted earlier this week now finds registered voters evenly
split in their assessments of the 43rd president -- a verdict roughly
equal to the esteem in which they hold his successor, President Obama. As
Bush prepares to attend the dedication of his presidential library in Dallas,
Texas, on Thursday, his increasing approval generally mirrors the trend
for other former presidents, but Bush's turnaround is remarkable, given
how low the numbers were when he left office. At his lowest,
amid the dark days of the financial collapse in October 2008, only
23 percent rated Bush positively.Throughout President Obamas first term
-- when the incumbent relentlessly blamed his predecessor for the state
of the economy and a host of national security problems -- Bush,
aside from promoting his 2010 memoir and giving a small number of
paid speeches, mostly remained silent. This was in keeping with the practice
of his father, George H.W. Bush, of never criticizing his successor, and
it may partially explain the rise in esteem for th
