Hebrew Text Support for Efax
----------------------------
Avner Lottem, lottem@techunix.technion.ac.il, August 1995.

Efax, written by Ed Casas, is an elegant fax program used to prepare,
transmit and receive faxes. A fax input file to the efax package can
be text, PostScript or portable bitmap (PBM) format.

A Hebrew PostScript file is created using heavy packages, such as TeX--XeT,
troffh and alike, and does not need any support from the fax program.
A Hebrew text file, on the other hand, is not compatible with the efax
utilities for the following reasons:

o Efix, the program that converts text to fax, uses a PBM font.
Hebrew files need a font that includes the Hebrew characters.
o Hebrew files are right-to-left oriented, so a transformation
that reverses the lines before efix is necessary.

Though it is possible to fax PostScript Hebrew documents, not always
is it the most convenient way. Sometimes a person would like to write a
small text file and submit it as is, without having to run any document
formatting program.

Related packages
----------------
o vim3.0-rlh0.1.tgz, a very small patch to vim 3.0, enables Hebrew
editing of files with vim. The only requirement for this patch
is a terminal with an 8 bit clean Hebrew font.

o hebxfonts-0.1.tgz is a collection of X fonts that can be used with Hebrew
   vim.
