a petroleum engineer -- and her longtime commitment to
conservation made Jewell the right person for the job."She brings an important
mix of strong management skills, appreciation for our nation's tradition
of protecting our public lands and heritage, and a keen understanding of
what it means to be good stewards of our natural resources," Obama
said.Jewell, 57, of Seattle, also was a banker before taking over Kent,
Wash.-based REI in 2005. She also served on the board of the
National Parks Conservation Association, an advocacy group that works to
protect and enhance national parks.Jewell has made it clear she intends
to strike a balance between the dual roles of conserving and developing
resources, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the chairman of the Senate Energy and
Natural Resources Committee, said. "That's exactly the right approach to
take on the diverse issues facing Interior, including safely developing
natural gas, maximizing jobs and opportunities from recreation and improving
management of federal forests."Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said she worked
closely with Jewell on wilderness legislation in Washington state and was
confident that Jewell "will bring her skills as an effective CEO in
the business community to the Cabinet."The Senate vote came after Sen. Jim
Risch, R-Idaho, lifted a "hold" on Jewell's nomination. Risch and other
lawmakers, including Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., have expressed concern that

Texas. He said he will carefully evaluate the impact of
a move on his business and its 150 employees."I have a very
serious commitment to my employees, which is more than they got from
their state legislators," he said.Malkowski and Scalise said they will meet
with members of Connecticut's congressional delegation next Tuesday and
Wednesday to counter lobbying from gun control advocates. An agreement between
two conservative senators Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican
Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania was expected to make it likelier that
the Senate's initial vote Thursday to begin debating gun legislation will
succeed. But the fate of gun legislation remains unclear, clouded by opposition
from many Republicans and moderate Democrats in the Democratic-led Senate
and Republican-run House."I have a duty to make sure they hear something
from our side," Malkowski said.

In President Obama's push to crack down on the abundance of firearms
in America, proposed gun-control legislation may be having the opposite
effect.Updated FBI statistics show that background checks in the first three
months of the year far outpace the number of checks in early
2012. The stats show that from January through March, gun owners went
through 7 million background checks -- compared with just 4.8 million in
the first three months of last year. The spike in checks, coupled with
mounting anecdotal claims that ammunition is hard to come by, comes amid
concern by gun owners that new proposals at the state and federal
level could limit access to firearms.Though supporters of the legislation
say that is not the case, the assurances haven't stopped what statistics
suggest is a run on weapons. The purchases have picked up ever
since Obama's election in 2008. Since 2009, there have been 71 million
background checks logged in the federal system. The annual number has risen
every year. The recorded checks only apply to sales from licensed dealers. The
most recent spike further adds to the underlying challenge facing lawmakers
-- how do you regulate weapons when there are already 300 million
of them, and rising, in circulation? While some lawmakers have proposed clawing
back currently owned assault-style weapons, most proposed assault-weapons
bans only apply to future purchases. And at the federal level, the
chance of such a ban passing has
