A Pennsylvania man will soon stand trial for raiding asecret stash of
historic hooch, a100-proof-plus cache of pre-Prohibition whiskey valued
by one expert at more than $100,000.John Saunders allegedly belted back
50-or-so of the 104 total bottles Old Farm Pure Rye Whiskey that
were, until recently, surreptitiously stowed behind a stairwell leading
to his Scottdale, Pa., basement apartment.Saunders, who, according to his
former landlord, was supposed to safeguard the whiskey, denies having touched
the spirits. However, court-ordered genetic samples furnished by Saunders
matched the whiskeys unique profile, according to WTAE 4, which first reported
the story. The 62-year-old was subsequently charged by authorities with felony
theft, as well as receiving stolen property.- Patricia Hill"The DNA doesn't
lie, Patricia Hill, Saunders ex-landlord, told the station while hinting
that her one-time tenant may have a problem with alcohol. I'm just
disappointed a family friend of over 40 years has lied. It's a shame
it took historic whiskey to realize and come to this point, but
if it saved his life, maybe that's the best of it all."WTAE
4 reports the whiskey had likely languished in the covert, closet-like chamber
in Saunders rental unit since before Prohibition, or when it was initially
delivered to local, Pittsburgh industrialist J.P. Brennan in 1917.Brennan,
who once cavorted with Andrew Carnegie, long ago resided in the mansion
that came to house

after a meeting with Gov. Pat Quinn in Chicago.APShown here is former
Metra CEO Alex Clifford.FNCA former Chicago-area executive is blowing the
whistle in the latest case to showcase what is derisively known as
the "Illinois way" -- politicians' practice of doing business by dishing
out favors to friends who contribute generously to their campaigns. This
time, a top-ranking Democrat has been implicated. The case involves Illinois'
most powerful Democratic leader -- state House Speaker Michael Madigan --
and the former head of the Chicago area's commuter rail service, Metra.
In a rare move earlier this week, Metra's ex-CEO Alex Clifford came
forward publicly to reveal specific details about how he says he was
forced out of his lucrative job after refusing to cave to political
pressure.Clifford, who was hired from California in 2001, testified during
a recent Regional Transportation Authority board meeting in Chicago. For
two hours he spoke openly about what he calls serious "ethical and
moral character flaws" from people who practice the "Illinois way" of doing
business, including Madigan.Clifford claims Madigan specifically wanted
a pay raise for a Metra employee, Patrick Ward, who has been
a generous contributor to Madigan's campaign, according to state records.
Clifford testified: "What

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">"We have listened to President Obamas comments about the verdict in the
Zimmerman Case. People are focusing on this quote: Trayvon Martin couldve
been me 35 years ago. To focus on this one line misses
the nuances of the Presidents message, which includes comments about how
African Americans view the Zimmerman Case in the context of the history
of racial disparity in America."For more than a year, we have been
listening to the conversation about this case -- from voices on every
side -- and we have become very sensitive to the racial context
that surrounds this case. We acknowledge Mr. Obamas remarks regarding the
frustration felt by some when viewed in context of our nations history,
which includes racial insensitivities spanning generations, and existing
even today, including within our criminal justice system."While we acknowledge
and understand the racial context of this case, we challenge people to
look closely and dispassionately at the facts. We believe those who look
at the facts of the case without prejudice will see that it
is a clear case of self-defense, and we are certain that those
who take a closer look at the kind of person George Zimmerman
is -- something we understand the Department of Justice is currently doing
-- we are confident they will find a young man with with
a diverse ethnic and racial background who is not a racist, a
man who is, in fact, sensitive to the complex racial history of
our country."It takes cour
FILE: 2008: Maryland Democratic Rep. Donna Edwards at a Capitol Hill
press conference.REUTERSMaryland Rep. Donna Edwards said Sunday she wasnt
ready to support a boycott of Florida over the Trayvon Martin case,
despite reported support from members of her own Congressional Black Caucus.Edwards,
a Democrat, told Fox News Sunday that she has yet to fully
examine the call to boycott, as proposed by civil rights leader the
Rev. Jesse Jackson.Jackson said after a Florida jury found neighborhood
watch volunteer George Zimmerman not guilty July 13 of all charges in
the fatal 2012 killing of Martin, a teenager, that his Rainbow PUSH
Coalition would consider a boycotting on Florida, which he characterized
as a kind of apartheid state."Edwards said that to her knowledge the
caucus has yet to formally discuss the issues and express concern about
a statewide boycott. The impact on some communities could be devastating,
Edwards said. Her comments follows three other caucus members -- Democratic
Reps. Lacy Clay, Bennie Thompson and Barbara Lee saying they would
support such a boycott."That's probably the best strategy because people
understand dollars and cents," Clay, D-Mo., said Friday, according to The
Hill newspaper. "And they understand, if there's a significant drop-off
in revenues at conventions, at Disney World and Universal Studios
that will get the attention of the powerful."
