UNIX AUTO-TUTOR (TM) Version 1.1 for Linux
                  The Interactive Guide to Unix
                              from
                         SUNNY MICRO LAB

WHAT IS IT?
As its name implies, the Unix Auto-Tutor is an automatic Unix
tutor - a comprehensive, fully interactive, self-teaching CBT
system for Unix training. It runs on any Linux system.

Version 1.0 was released in March under the name of the
    Interactive Unix Guide.

WHAT IS IT FOR?
It can be used to set up a lab for classes or to train staff
in a department. A consultant can also install it in several
Linux notebooks and bring them to clients' sites for on-site
training. It can also be installed in a Linux-based BBS or
Internet box to provide on-line Unix training service. For
individuals, it serves as an attendant tutor and reference on
your desktop, you can learn Unix any time and as long as you
want. And you'll learn it fast and with ease.

HOW IS IT LIKE?
The structure of Auto-Tutor is similar to a traditional Unix
textbook, except that it is of hypertext and, wherever a traditional
textbook shows examples of command usages on paper, the Auto-Tutor
extends it with an interactive tutorial session and thus the
reader can jump into the tutorial and try things out themself.
Of course, the Auto-Tutor offers many other features a paper
textbook couldn't. Currently it has 9 chapters and 76 sections
with 87 interactive tutorial session attached to its hypertext
    pages.

Each tutorial session contains a number of exercise cycles.
Each cycle in turn consists of the following steps:
          1. Introduction to a command or a concept,
          2. Things for the user to try out or to answer,
          3. Display of output from the above step,
          4. Explanation to the output above.
Each cycle constructs an artificial situation to help the user
to understand a concept or to practice a command. There are more
than 1000 exercise cycles in the system. Whenever possible, the
actual commands in the host OS are called for demo and thus the
user will see the real output from the host Unix system.

The interface of Auto-Tutor is a curses-based full screen menu-driven
system. It can be run from a dump terminal or a slow dial-up line or
under X Windows. The navigation inside Auto-Tutor is simple and
self-explaining. In fact, only the four arrow keys are needed. The
Auto-Tutor itself does not incur any learning curve. It is extremely
    easy to use.

HOW GOOD IS IT?
It is good. It delivers quick result and better understanding. It
makes it interesting to learn Unix. It realizes the principle of
'learning by practice' to its fullness and thus is much more effective
than any other known training methods. It was designed to guide
step by step average novices of no Unix knowledge into Unix mastery
in about two weeks and get them ready for advanced subjects such
as shell programming and system administration.

We have been using the Auto-Tutor to train our clients in our
lab and on-sites, and at the same time selling it to local
companies and individuals. Everyone is happy with it.

To let you judge how extensive the Auto-Tutor teaches, a listing
of commands (about 160) introduced in the Auto-Tutor is enclosed
below. Even advanced utilities or concepts like find, vi, sed, awk
and regular expressions (grep) are now introduced with interactive
    tutorials.
