All in all, this was a pretty shameful day for Washington, but
this effort is not over''-- President Obama in the Rose Garden denouncing
the bipartisan Senate vote to block expanded background checks for firearms
purchases. An angry President Obama vented his frustrations with Congress
after several of his fellow Democrats helped block gun-control legislation
in the Senate. Denouncing the lies of his political opponents and calling
the day shameful, Obama vowed to fight on.But there seems to be
little fear of Obamas anger. The president promised that he would mobilize
his supporters to push his agenda, defy history to make midterm election
gains and thereby avoid lame-duck status. But its apparent that many of
his fellow Democrats either dont think he is serious or dont believe
he can make it stick.Theres reason for them to disbelieve.Obamas strategy
of battering Republicans with a series of painful votes to make midterm
gains for his party depends on getting Democrats to take politically risky
stances. If Obama cannot threaten or entice Democrats to vote his way,
though, the plan cannot work.As the vote on gun control approached, Obama
did hit the campaign trail as promised to speak in support. But
it was a muted measure. Obama didnt visit the home states of
Democratic holdouts or use his online network to hold major rallies or
organize his community to knock on doors. After the first test of Obamas
new model, he has nothing to show. Had
nment Accountability Office found
that although the number of mental health records available to the background
check system increased 800 percent since 2004, some states said they were
not sharing mental health information because of concerns about restrictions
under HIPAA privacy law. Obama is interested in a change that would
specifically allow disclosure of mental health records for the system, and
he wants to increase financial incentives for states to contribute the information. In
the Virginia Tech rampage, student Seung-Hui Cho shot 32 people to death
and committed suicide. He was able to buy two guns even though
he had been ruled a danger to himself during a court hearing
in 2005 and was ordered to undergo outpatient mental health treatment.Authorities
have not described a possible motive or released details of any mental
health condition that might explain why Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza killed
20 children and six adults before killing himself. The rifle he used
was purchased by his mother, whom he also killed at home before
heading to the school. The background check system does not give retailers
access to mental health records but simply tells them whether a buyer
is approved, denied or needs additional investigation before a firearm may
be purchased. The system doesn't tell the seller why a potential buyer
was denied.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">A new book suggests economics might help your relationship more than marital
counselingSure, you could tune into TV talk shows for some tough love
advice about the state of your relationship, or have a sit-down for
coffee with your closest girlfriends to vent about your husband's domestic
shortcomings. But have you ever considered the advice of Adam Smith or perhaps
John Maynard Keynes? There's a lot you could learn about marital bickering
from these two dead economists. So say the authors of the book
Spousonomics: Using Economics to Master Love, Marriage & Dirty Dishes.Authors
Paula Szuchman and Jenny Anderson, who write for The Wall Street Journal
and the New York Times, have applied the market rules of cold
hard capitalism to the economy of your marriage to help you efficiently
allocate limited resources such as time, money, sanity, and, yes, even your
sex drive. Prevention.com chatted with the authors to learn the top seven
marriage mistakes even smart couples make. (Spice up your marriage tonight
with these tips to Have Hotter Sex In 5 Minutes!)1. Splitting
the housework 50/50. This is often considered the "fairest" way to split
the chores, whether it's washing the dishes or walking the dog. But
aiming for 50/50 means you're constantly keeping score, making sure that
neither of you is getting the short end of the stick, and
bickering every time you think you are. Spend too much time fixating
on fairness today, and you risk not maki
UNITED NATIONS The joint U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria on Friday
gave the Security Council a grim assessment of the Syrian civil war,
saying that Damascus is completely uncooperative in negotiations."With the
Syrians, I got nowhere," Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters after the closed-door
briefing.Since last year, Brahimi has been promoting a peace plan that would
call for a transitional government in which Syrian President Bashar Assad
would step aside. Damascus has shown no appetite for discussing Assad's
resignation.Brahimi also chided the Security Council for its ongoing deadlock
over the war. Western and Arab nations blame the conflict on Assad's
government. Russia insists on assigning equal blame to the Syrian rebel
opposition, and has used it veto, along with China, to block draft
council resolutions."On the Security Council, with the Americans and the
Russians, we made some progress but it is too little," Brahimi said."If
they really believe that they are in charge of looking after peace
and security, there is no time for them to lose to really
take this question more seriously than they have until now," he said.Brahimi
denied rumors he was resigning, capping a week of widespread reports in
the Arab world that he was quitting in frustration, or dumping his
affiliation with the Arab League, which has officially recognized the Syrian
opposition forces as the legitimate government.Brahimi assumed the U.N.-Arab
League envoy role las
