Hiring picked up in April after a slow couple months, as employers
added 165,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dipped to a four-year low
of 7.5 percent. The Labor Department report showed positive signs though
the economic recovery remains shaky. A mix of government spending cuts and
tax hikes has threatened to curb economic growth, which is already slow
in a post-recession environment. The jobless rate dipped only slightly, from
7.6 percent to 7.5 percent. The government also revised up its estimate
of job gains in February and March by a combined 114,000. It
now says employers added 332,000 jobs in February and 138,000 in March.Stock
prices soared on the heels of the report, with the Dow surging
past 15,000 for the first time ever an hour after trading began. The
economy has created an average of 208,000 jobs a month from November
through April. That's above the 138,000 added in the previous six months. The
only sectors of the economy that cut jobs last month were construction
and governmentEconomic figures in recent days have been mixed. The government
said Thursday that the number of Americans applying for unemployment aid
fell last week to a seasonally adjusted 324,000 -- the fewest since
January 2008.At the same time, surveys have shown that hiring by private
companies was weak and that manufacturing activity declined in April. And
exports fell in March. The economy grew in the January-March quarter at an
annual pace of 2.5 percent, m

of Riccardo Portillo hold hands during a news conference at Intermountain
Medical Center, in Murray, Utah.APMURRAY, Utah A longtime Utah soccer referee
in a coma after being punched by a teenager during a weekend
game had been attacked by other angry players before, but he continued
refereeing because he loved the game, his family says.Ricardo Portillo,
46, has swelling in his brain and his recovery is uncertain as
he remains in critical condition, Dr. Shawn Smith said Thursday at the
Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.Police
say a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league punched Portillo
on Saturday after the man called a foul on him and issued
him a yellow card. The teen has been booked into juvenile detention
on suspicion of aggravated assault. Those charges could be amplified if
Portillo dies.Portillo's oldest daughter, 26-year-old Johana Portillo, said
at a news conference Thursday that her father has been attacked by
other players before -- even having his ribs and leg broken."People don't
know it's a game," she said. "We're all there to have fun,
not to go and kill each other."Smith declined to discuss what caused
Ricardo Portillo's injuries or divulge his prognosis due to the ongoing
police investigation. But Johana Portillo said her father might not survive."I
know he didn't, he doesn't want to leave us," she s

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">May 3, 2013: President Obama delivers a speech at the Anthropology Museum
in Mexico City, Mexico.APIn Washington, it may seem like Congress has moved
beyond gun control. After Democrats' highly touted background check bill
was defeated in a Senate procedural vote last month, lawmakers immediately
turned their attention to other matters, like immigration legislation, the
budget and -- in light of the Boston terror attack -- security. But
President Obama and his allies do not plan to let up, with
Vice President Biden reportedly preparing to launch a new push for gun
legislation and Obama's campaign arm trying to enlist the public to support
the cause. As opponents of stricter gun laws rallied Friday in Texas for
the National Rifle Association's annual convention, Obama himself used a
speech during his visit to Mexico to once again sound the call
for new regulations."Most of the guns used to commit violence here in
Mexico come from the United States," Obama told the crowd. "I think
many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual
right to bear arms. And as president, I swore an oath to
uphold that right, and I always will. But at the same time,
as I've said in the United States, I will continue to do
everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out
of the hands of criminals and dangerous people."That can save lives here
in Mexico and back home in the United States," he said. While an

the dire warnings issued by agencies, in part because agency budget officers
working with Congress have been permitted to transfer money between accounts.
That allowed the Justice Department, for instance, to avoid temporary layoffs
called furloughs. But budget experts warn that the grip of sequestration
will grow tighter as weeks and months pass, leading to teacher layoffs,
reduced funding for infrastructure and economic development projects, and
a host of other cuts across the budget. Many liberal activists were infuriated
when Congress last week swiftly moved to address problems with air traffic
control that led to widespread flight delays while leaving other problems
like cuts to preschool for the poor and Meals on Wheels for
the elderly unaddressed. Most lawmakers are frequent fliers. At issue in
the latest recalculation are accounts that were cut more deeply under a
full-year funding bill enacted in March than they would have been under
the across-the-board cuts. They get funds restored. It's up to the White
House Office of Management and Budget to calculate the across-the-board
cuts. The State Department said Friday that cuts to its budget would be
only $400 million, less than half of $850 million that was originally
estimated. That means it was able to avoid furloughing workers.
