CAIRO Egypt's state news agency says a hard-line Islamist preacher has
been arrested for slandering a famous actress by accusing her of "practicing
prostitution."In December, Abdullah Badr was sentenced to a year in prison
and fined for his remarks about Elham Chahine on el-Hafiz TV, which
is associated with the ultraconservative Salafi movement.MENA says his appeal
was rejected earlier this week and police arrested him Wednesday in the
Delta Sharqia province after he failed to turn himself in.Chahine sued Badr
after he accused her on his show of "practicing prostitution" and teaching
Egyptian women how to "be immoral and commit adultery." His remarks came
after she criticized radical Islamists for their view of the arts.Chahine's
lawyer complained the actress had been exposed to "insults, cursing and
humiliation."
LONDON A British adventurer has died and two others suffered frostbite
as they tried to cross Greenland's ice cap on a charity hike,
officials said Wednesday. The British Foreign Office said Philip Goodeve-Docker
died and two others on the trek remained hospitalized. On Friday, the three-man
expedition got caught by a strong cold wind that sweeps across the
eastern part of the vast icecap, Poul Petersen, a spokesman for the
police in Greenland said. A rescue helicopter was not able to reach
the men until Saturday because of the bad weather, and on arrival
they found that Goodeve-Docker was dead. The survivors were flown to Britain
via Iceland after first being treated at a hospital in Tasiilaq on
Greenland's east coast, 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of the Arctic Circle,
Petersen said. Goodeve-Docker's body was being sent later to Britain, he
said.Goodeve-Docker embarked on the trip to raise money for charity in honor
of his grandfather, who died two years ago.On his website, he described
the 500 to 600-kilometer (310 to 370-mile) trek as one of the
great polar challenges. The adventurer said he expected the trip's dangers
to include polar bears, strong winds, crevasses up to 500 meters (1,650
feet) and temperatures as low as minus 50 Celsius (minus 58 Fahrenheit).

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">Aug. 29, 2012: Senator Kelly Ayotte addresses the second session of the
Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.ReutersWARREN, N.H. A
woman whose mother was killed in last year's school shooting in Newtown,
Conn., confronted Sen. Kelly Ayotte Tuesday during the senator's first public
appearance in New Hampshire since voting against gun control legislation.About
150 people attended the town hall meeting, where Ayotte defended her vote
against a bill that would have required criminal and mental health background
checks for people buying guns online or at gun shows. After the vote
two weeks ago, the New Hampshire Republican, a former prosecutor, expressed
concern that expanded background checks could harm the rights of gun owners."I'm
just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in
the halls of her elementary school isn't as important," WMUR-TV reported
Erica Lafferty asking.Lafferty's mother, Dawn Hochsprung, was the principal
of Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 pupils and six educators were
slain in December. She died after lunging at the gunman to try
to stop him from firing.Ayotte said she was sorry for what Lafferty
has been through."And I think that ultimately when we look at what
happened in Sandy Hook we should have a fuller discussion to make
sure that doesn't happen again," she said.Ayotte said she hoped to find
some common ground but that she didn't think the enhanced background checks

the groups official mouthpiece, Gilani denied claims he is a radical. He
