n.Obama will announce Wheeler's and Watt's appointments from the White
House Wednesday afternoon. The White House officials spoke on condition
of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the appointments
before the president's formal announcement.Watt's nomination comes at a
crucial time for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two federally sponsored mortgage-finance
enterprises that the government rescued at the height of the financial crisis
in September 2008 as they teetered near collapse from losses on mortgage
loans gone bad.Taxpayers have spent about $170 billion to rescue the companies.
So far, they have repaid a combined $55.2 billion.Fannie and Freddie together
own or guarantee about half of all U.S. mortgages, or nearly 31
million home loans. Those loans are worth more than $5 trillion. Along
with other federal agencies, they back roughly 90 percent of new mortgages.The
nomination comes as the housing industry is making a comeback. Home prices
are up, foreclosures are down and housing construction is on the rise.
Moreover, Fannie Mae had its biggest yearly profit last year, earning $17.2
billion.Watt, a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee
and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, played an influential
role in the passage of a financial regulatory overhaul in 2010. That
legislation, however, did not address the fate of the major mortgage lenders,
an issue likely to come up during Obam
acCallum. How can they possibly get up there and just lie
to the press corps?Ventrell said that the State Department periodically
sends out notices to the entire staff advising them of the protections
afforded whistle-blowers under federal law, and that such a notice, in accordance
with regular practice every spring, was disseminated just last week.Interviewed
on the Los Angeles campus of the University of Southern California on
Tuesday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., argued the allegations of threats and
intimidation expose the need for a more comprehensive probe of the Benghazi

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">The U.S. has identified the mastermind of the Benghazi attack, sources tell
Fox News, though the individual apparently is walking free in Libya.The
confirmation from multiple sources comes more than seven months after the
assault on two U.S. locations in Benghazi, Libya, where four Americans --
including Ambassador Chris Stevens -- were killed. President Obama pledged
after the attack that "justice will be done."But one source told Fox
News the government is "sitting on" information."We basically don't want
to upset anybody, and the problem is, if Ambassador Stevens' family knew
that we were sitting on information about the people who killed their
son, their brother, on and on, then, and we could look them
as a government in the face, then we're messing up. We're messing
up," the source said.Fox News spoke exclusively with one special operator
who watched the events unfold in real time and has debriefed those
who were part of the response. He remains anonymous for his safety
and has decided to talk because he says he and others connected
with the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Benghazi are frustrated with the
excuses and lack of a military response since Stevens and three other
Americans were killed."We have all the capability, all the training, all
the capacity, to kill and capture not only terrorists involved, with the
specific events of 9/11, and Ambassador Stevens' death, but terrorists that
are feeding other regions including Europe th
HAT YAI, Thailand Police say suspected insurgents have killed six people
including a 2-year-old boy in one of the deadliest shootings in Thailand's
south this year.Police Col. Tuanday Juthanan says four militants opened
fire with M16 rifles in front of a grocery store in Pattani
city on Wednesday night.He says the attack killed six people, all Buddhists,
and injured another man. It wasn't immediately clear why they were targeted.Tuanday
says the attackers fled on two motorcycles and dropped nails on the
road to prevent security forces from pursuing them.More than 5,000 people
have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces since an Islamic
insurgency erupted in 2004.Attacks occur almost daily in the Muslim-dominated
sub-region despite recent government efforts to hold peace talks with the
militants.
