(AFP) Algeria's public prosecutor on Sunday demanded the death penalty
for two men on trial for abducting and murdering two boys aged
nine and 10, the news agency APS reported. The prosecutor said a third
man accused of not alerting the police about the kidnapping that occurred
in March should be handed a life sentence, the national news agency
said. The boys were strangled to death and their bodies found on Tuesday
inside plastic shopping bags not far from their home in the city
of Constantine, east of Algiers.Their brutal death triggered a national
outcry. Two men were arrested hours after the bodies were found and admitted
their responsibility, officials have said. The abduction of children in Algeria
has been on the rise, according to official estimates which indicated that
31 children were kidnapped in the past year compared to four in
2008.
IDYLLWILD, Calif. Firefighters in Southern California aided by heavy rain
in the mountains above Palm Springs were starting to turn the tide
Sunday on a stubborn wildfire that has burned across more than 40
square miles, destroyed a handful of homes and forced the evacuation of
thousands of people. An inch and a half of rain was measured Sunday
morning at the aerial tramway near Palm Springs, with more rainfall expected
throughout the day. The moisture helped slow the fire's progress."With diminished
fire activity, firefighters made great progress with line construction,
particularly along the east side towards Palm Springs," said U.S. Forest
Service spokesman John Miller. With the blaze almost half contained, authorities
were able to lift evacuation orders for several communities. The fire was
still far from extinguished, however. The thunderstorm helping douse the
flames could also bring lightning, wind and flooding, said Miller, all hazardous
conditions for fire crews. The mountain wildfire began last Monday and has
burned across about 42 square miles. It has destroyed 23 structures, including
seven homes. The fire was less than two miles from Idyllwild on its
western flank. It was a similar distance from Palm Springs below on
the desert floor, where an enormous plume of smoke could be seen.Authorities
have said the fire was human-caused, but wouldn't say whether it was
accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of injuries.More

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">FILE: Jan. 21, 2013: President Obama starts in second term at the
ceremonial swearing-in at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.APJust six
months into his second term, President Obama has nominated a slew of
campaign donors and fundraisers for ambassadorships. These nominations include
major bundlers Denise Bauer and a Los Angeles entertainment attorney Crystal
Nix Hines. As of last month, Obama had given 32.2 percent of ambassadorships
to political appointees -- almost identical to his first term rate and
slightly higher than those of recent predecessors in the long-held tradition
of presidents rewarding big-time financial supporters. The number compares
to 30.02 percent under George W. Bush, 27.82 percent under Bill Clinton
and 31.30 percent under George H.W. Bush, according to the American Foreign
Service Association. The president has nominated 19 people for ambassadorships
in the second term including at least eight bundlers, according to The
Hill newspaper. The 2011-2012 amounts range from $2.36 million by Bauer,
chairwoman of the Women for Obama Finance, who would go to Belgium,
to $477,000 from Hines, who would represent the United States at the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO.Other
bundlers have been named to serve in Austria, Germany, Singapore, Spain,
the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom. But much of the attention
remains focused on who will get two of the remaining top posts

PITTSBURGH An unidentified city police sergeant is facing possible discipline
for having his picture taken in uniform while wearing a unicorn mask
and standing next to a porn star who had just been thrown
out of a Pittsburgh Pirates game for dancing in the costume head. But
the woman who took the picture, an adult film producer named Steviee
Hughes, said she's not sure what the fuss is all about, though
she's assuming it has more to do with adult entertainer Andy San
Dimas posing next to the officer than it does the oversized animal
head he wore on July 13.Calling it a "mountain made out of
mole hill," Hughes said, "I'm sure if she wouldn't have been a
porn star, it would have been OK."City public safety officials said Dimas
was in town last Saturday to dance at a local night club
but went to the Pirates game first and was ejected by security
for refusing to sit down after she was seen dancing while wearing
the large unicorn head. When Dimas was taken to a security office at
PNC Park, the sergeant and others were standing around and Hughes said
he agreed to wear the unicorn head and pose for a picture,
which Hughes then posted on Twitter. That's when the tweet hit the fan.Gossipy
news blogs Deadspin and TMZ posted the photo as well as cellphone
video Hughes shot of Dimas dancing in the unicorn head just before
she was ejected. Rumors spread that the dancer was high on drugs
or part of a sexual cult fixated on unicorns.Hughes said the tr
