SPECIALIX SIO/XIO DEVICE DRIVER FOR LINUX - Version 0.5.9
---------------------------------------------------------
This is an interim announcement to let everyone know that I have just
uploaded version 0.5.9 of the Specialix SIO/XIO device driver for Linux
to sunsite.unc.edu.
The previous version (0.5.8) did not allow use of the driver on 1.2.x
version kernels without some modification. Version 0.5.9 should work (or
at least compile ;-) properly on version 1.2.x kernels.
It was hoped that this would be the last Alpha version of the driver and
that the driver could soon be moved to Beta status. However, I've just
had a report that the driver is stalling at very high baud rates (~115200
on the XIO only) and the driver will remain Alpha until I have fully
investigated what is causing this.
The driver package includes code that runs on the card that is
copyrighted by Specialix International. Specialix have kindly allowed
its distribution with the Linux driver under certain conditions (see the
si_download.c file that comes in the driver package for full details).
It is hoped that the driver will eventually be available as a kernel
loadable module but for now (and the immediate future) it will have to be
linked in the normal way.
The driver is located at
sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/kernel/patches/serial/sidrv0_5.taz
It was uploaded on Tuesday (11.7.95) so please allow a few days for the
sunsite maintainer to move it to the correct directory. (If you can wait
you should get it from a mirror site that is closest to you).
All bug reports should be directed to :
simonallen@cix.compulink.co.uk.
Finally, I must say that development of the driver has been a lot slower
than I would have liked (due to other commitments) but I *will* promise
to answer all queries.
Also, if anyone has any *specific* problems with the driver they will
receive the highest priority and I'll normally be able to offer a fix
within a couple of days. (General questions, as with miracles, may take
a little longer...;-)
Simon Allen.
