Announcing v0.01 alpha of the Track List Transfer Protocol

by Kevin McCormick (fbyte@sub-zero.mit.edu)

Quick synopsis:
The Track List Transfer Protocol (tltp) provides a way for a CD
player control application to request data about the tracks
on a CD from a centralized database, removing the need for
users to manually build a database of the tracks on their CDs.

Longer, verbose description:

It occurred to me one day when I was using WorkMan that it would be
really great if there were some way to have a single, really huge
centralized database of CD track information. Having nothing better
to do one night, I wrote one. The result is a simple TCP/IP daemon
that listens on port 2222 of the system running the server and
accepts requests for track information from clients anywhere on the
Internet.

My current server implementation is okay, but it needs more testing
than I can do alone. I have modified a copy of WorkMan (in a VERY
kludgy manner) to talk to my server. It is available via ftp at
sub-zero.mit.edu, in directory /pub/workman-tltp. I would be most
appreciative if a number of people would download this copy of
WorkMan, use it for a while and see if the database server is doing
the right things.

I will continue to improve my server, and I hope to get a version
of WorkMan working much better Real Soon Now. But I could really
use some input from other Linux users. I'll also be finishing my
specification for tltp and releasing it, so that people can
incorporate it in their CD players if they so desire. Keep checking
on sub-zero.mit.edu for updates.

Q: How many Microsoft engineers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: None. They just define darkness as an industry standard.
