If you use Linux (or another PC-based Unix) and PPP through Telecom's modem
pool, I may have something for you.

However, it doesn't cost you any money, and may save you some.

A while back, someone wrote a package to monitor the CPU load, and display
it on a parallel port device, usually consisting of LEDs. With the help of
many people, we've merged this package and the pppstats package, yielding a
device which can monitor your PPP usage, and tell you at a glance whether
you are connected or not.

The hardware can be built for less than three dollars, or up to twenty
dollars, depending on how nice you'd like it to look. The software is free.
We'll be putting the software up for FTP on sunsite and other mirrors.
I'll provide technical support on the software and help with hardware
construction. Any input on the project at this stage is welcome, and should
be forwarded to spberry@iastate.edu.
