From the day the book was published, The Linux Bible has been
"The Standard Reference" that people turn to when they want to have
the printed collection of the works of the Linux Documentation Project
at their fingertips. Now the long awaited Third Edition of
Yggdrasil's _The Linux Bible_ is here. The Linux Bible has grown to
1592 pages and now includes a CD-ROM with two linux distributions and a
browser for searching the entire contents of the linux bible, linux
manual pages, and the linux software map. The Third Edition also
includes a response card for a complimentary copy of The Linux
Journal.

The best news is that even though Third Edition has much more
in it than its already substantial predecessors, the price is still
just $39.95, the same price as the first and second editions.
Reseller prices are also unchanged.

CD-ROM SEARCH ENGINE

The most obvious new feature of The Linux Bible, and the
feature that sets it apart from other linux books is its CD-ROM.
Although there are other linux books that include a CD with a linux
distribution, our CD is different in that besides having two separate
linux distributions (MCC and Slackware 2.3 minus any unfree software),
it also has the contents the linux bible, the linux manual pages and
the linux software map on line, each in HTML hypertext and WAIS
searchable formats, along with a preconfigured linux front end to
these services.

This is a fundamental difference between the usefulness of The
Linux Bible and any other linux-related book. Finding information in
other linux references is not a problem if you know approximately
where to find it, but The Linux Bible's CD-ROM search engine can point
you to the information you are looking for given some keywords even if
you do not know where exactly to find it, even for words that are not
in the printed index, and it can often find mentions of what you are
looking for that you might otherwise miss. If you want to try the
Linux Bible's search interface before you buy, log into
bible-demo.yggdrasil.com as "bible" (there is no password). The
entire CDROM, including a printable version of the Linux Bible, is
FTPable from ftp.yggdrasil.com:pub/cdrom/bible-3.

ERGONOMICS

To make it more convenient to carry this Linux Bible around or
throw it in a backpack, we have made the Third Edition slightly
smaller in each dimension (7" x 9.25" x 1.5") and lighter even though
it has more content and a much higher page count than its
predecessors. This was economically feasible only because we got an
extraordinary deal from a bible press. The new form factor also means
The Linux Bible now fits on standard height book shelves (a nice touch
for end users, but especially important for some bookstores).

LINUX BIBLE AVAILABLE BY FTP

If you would like to examine the arrangement of The Linux
Bible before you buy it, the Linux Bible's CDROM, including a
printable version of the Linux Bible, is FTPable from
ftp.yggdrasil.com:pub/cdrom/bible-3. Also, almost all of the contents
of The Linux Bible are from the Linux Documentation Project, which is
centrally maintained at sunsite.unc.edu:pub/docs.

SUPPORTS FREE SOFTWARE

For every copy of Third Edition of The Linux Bible sold, one
pretax dollar (which is a full dollar in most situations, and always a
full dollar for nonprofits) is set aside to support free software and
free documentation development. Of this, 25% will be donated directly to
the Linux Documentation Project. The other 75% will be paid in
proportion to page count, directly to LDP authors whose works are made
freely redistributable under terms not more restrictive than the GNU
general public license by September 1, 1995. Money corresponding to
the pages not freed by that time will be donated to the Free
Software Foundation.

MONEY BACK GUARANTEE

All direct sales from Yggdrasil have an unconditional 30 day
money back guarantee, and we encourage our resellers to offer the same
policies (and we back this up with full purchase credit for any
returned copies).

TECHNICAL SUPPORT (SOLD SEPARATELY)

Yggdrasil will maintain an up to date errata list for the
linux bible 3rd edition in ftp.yggdrasil.com:pub/products/bible-3/errata.txt.
Linux Bible users interested in mutual support can get instructions on
joining the linux-bible-users@yggdrasil.com mailing list by sending
mail to listserv@yggdrasil.com with "help" in the first line on the
body of the message.

Beyond that, technical support for all Yggdrasil products is
sold separately. To bundle the substantial cost of a lower grade of
"free" support into our product prices would at best only duplicate a
level of service already available online and from user groups. At
Yggdrasil we go to great lengths to provide the world's best
commercial technical support so that your problems will actually be
solved when you call us, but to do so we must insist on always being
paid. For more information on our technical support services, please
send an empty email message to tech-support-info@yggdrasil.com. We
are ready to assist you.

RESELLERS WANTED!

If you sell linux-related products or services, selling The
Linux Bible associates an excellent high quality product with your
business, reduces your customers' technical support needs, expands
your product line, supports free software in a visible way, and
increases your profits. Other linux books are okay when your
customers already know a lot of the information they are searching
for, but The Linux Bible's CD-ROM search engine can point your
customers to the information they are looking for given just keywords
without the need to consult with someone who has broad ranging linux
experience. And the best news is that Yggdrasil offers more
aggressive discounts than are normally available in the book trade.

New reseller-oriented features of The Third Edition include a
professionally designed cover, and a barcoded ISBN. We have added US
Library of Congress cataloging-in-publication data, making it salable
to libraries. The new 7" x 9.25" trim size allows The Linux Bible to
fit on more book shelves, and fit more easily into into UPS Red/Blue
letter packages and Priority Mail envelopes to qualify for low
domestic shipping prices. The reduced weight makes The Linux Bible
more economical to export. To insure that the book arrives in
pristine condition, each copy is individually shrinkwrapped.

If you would like to resell the linux bible, please call David
Fickes at (408) 261-6633. Yggdrasil offers excellent reseller
discounts.

FREE COPIES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

If you wrote something that is in The Linux Bible or on its
CD-ROM, you probably qualify for a free copy. Please see
ftp.yggdrasil.com:pub/for-contributors/free-copy-offer for details.

HOW TO GET THE LINUX BIBLE BY TOMORROW

Shipping and handling on all Yggdrasil direct end-user sales in
the United States is $5 per order, regardless of how many products you
order. For an extra $1, we will ship your order by Next Day Air
(Saturday delivery is another $5, please call for pricing for Sunday
delivery).

International air mail shipping is $10 per order.

Of course, the very fastest way to get a Linux Bible is to
drop by your local Yggdrasil reseller right now and pick one up. Our
distribution goes through more than one level of resellers, so we do
not have a complete list of everyone who sells our products, but we
are happy to help you find one if you call us.

To order, please call Yggdrasil at (800) 261-6630 or (408)
261-6630, or fax us at (408) 261-6630, or send email to
orders@yggdrasil.com, or use our web page (http://www.yggdrasil.com).
