Topic: About Linux: Installation, Caldera Presentation, And Dan Irvin
Linux, a public domain implementation of the POSIX operating system speci-
fication has been written entirely from scratch, and comes with source
code.
This months meeting will focus on Linux. We have four events planned:
1. From 6pm until the end of dinner we will be loading Linux on a
couple of members' PCs. Yes, right before your eyes. Proponents
of Linux say that it loads on almost anything, and it is easy to
do. So, we will put Linux to the test. We will have a couple of
experts available to assist the members as they load Linux. If
you would like to bring your PC to the meeting and have Linux
loaded free of charge, you need to make a reservation (space
limited) with Ron Colcernian rcc@simtel.coast.net.
2. Linux Systems Labs has once again offered to give away a free copy
of Linux on CD. To receive your copy of the CD you must be a paid
member, or a dinner guest at the July 11th meeting to qualify for
the CD. Those who don't qualify will have the opportunity to
purchase the CD from Linux Systems Labs. Linux Systems Labs,
distributes and sells Linux on both diskettes and CD ROM.
3. A representative of Caldera, the company started by Ray Norda
(former president of Novell), will be our main speaker for the
evening. Caldera, is developing a number of products and is very
interested in the events in the Linux market. They will be
speaking about what they believe will be required of Linux as it
matures into the mainstream computer industry.
4. Dan Irvin, of Linux Systems Labs, will be attending our meeting,
if time permits, Dan will address the group briefly. Otherwise,
Dan will be available for informal conversation.
Learn the answers to these questions and others:
+ Why are people and organizations using Linux?
+ What facilities are bundled with Linux, ie, networking, X etc.?
+ Why would you want to install Linux?
+ How would you get support for Linux?
+ What binaries will Linux execute?

What is the Michigan User Group?
The Michigan User Group helps bring UNIX/POSIX oriented profes-
sionals together on a regular basis for mutual support and learning.
Monthly dinner meetings, held at metro-area restaurants, feature
expert speakers on UNIX/POSIX addressing topics which range from
technical operating questions to more board-based issues such as
vendor support and new product presentations. A membership forum is
provided via E-mail and through the "Message of the Month" (motm)
newsletter, offering UNIX/POSIX news and ancillary information useful
to the UNIX/POSIX community.
