I just uploaded the current release of patches for /proc/dev, applicable
to Linux 1.3.3. /proc/dev is a directory which contains various device
entries. A shell script is contained to update /dev from it, which
makes MAKEDEV mostly obsolete. (you still need it for devices which are
not yet contained in /proc/dev) In particular, generating the correct
/dev/fd* entries for a particular configuration is done entirely
automatically now. Further, lp, ide, console, pty and scsi devices are
supported in this version.
I have only received positive replies after the last release and not a
single bug report, so I consider this patch to be stable.
The newest version of this patch is available via ftp from
cantor.informatik.rwth-aachen.de, pub/linux/procdev.tz. I can not
announce it each time a new version comes out, but I am trying my best
to keep it up to date with the current kernels, so perhaps you just look
there from time to time.
