<!--It was utterly preposterous, utterly stupid and totally unwise to m=
ake that decision. Even if Ella wanted to change her mind, she could not, b=
ut she could still feel the tingle through her fingers.=20

As the cold, rough metal skimmed pasted her fingertips she knew it was a ba=
d decision. Her hand trembled trying to stop her from going further. Yet th=
ere was no time to think, just to go. Putting her other hand on the first s=
he used all her might to turn the knob. Inside the cogs clicked and jittere=
d, waking to life after years of neglect.=20

And with a mighty swing the door snapped at the edges. The vines crawling o=
n the surface pulled at the root as it was opened. It took an extra shove a=
nd some will power to get the door open, her shoulder pressed against the w=
ood, it finally budged. From the other side golden sparks flickered across =
the frame. It was finally open.=20
Lifting herself straight, Ella watched in amazement as the door disappeared=
leaving an archway in its place. It was odd to see lush green flora, it wa=
s a far cry from the flat sand she was used to. Then the smell hit her. Pin=
e mixed with sweetness, vanilla perhaps? It entices her, making her stomach=
 rumble.=20
She was tempted. Yet she knew nothing was nice in this horror filled land. =
She learnt her lesson the hard way. Rubbing the bruise on her hip from the =
fall, it was the first chalaged she faced which almost became her last.=20
Inspecting the area with her feet glued to the floor, only her head poked t=
hrough the arch. On the left was a path. It wandered through trees and bush=
es to what looked like a stone block. On the right was a babbling, blue, br=
ook. Seeing the precious clean water reminded Ella how dry her mouth was.=
=20

There was no danger in sight. No winding labyrinth, no creatures lurking, n=
ot a puzzles in sight. Lifting herself she turned to the other door. It was=
a darker wood. No vines touched it, no type of foliage at all. It was bare=
from even moss and mud yet it leaked. Around the bottom was a pool of liqu=
id. The stones around the door had strange symbols which Ella could not dec=
ode. She could open the door to see if it would let her. Yet her conscience=
gave a hint that it was for the best to leave it be.=20
In the moment she decided to stick with her first option and took her first=
step into the lush land. Ella instinctively closed her eyes and placed her=
hands on her bottom in case of another nasty fall. She shrivelled expectin=
g the floor to swallow her whole. Yet she stayed perfectly still.=20

Peeking through her lashes, found herself a meer step inside. The path and =
brook still present. Twisting around she expected the door to be looming in=
place as well, but It had been bricked up. The large fence containing the =
garden had continued over the door. Large tree-like hands held the stones i=
n place. Flowers had started to sprout in the crevices, moss and vines held=
on top as an extra blanket of security.=20
Hobbling along to the brook Ella wasted no time taking a swig. Carelessly s=
he lowered her hand to the water, flinging the blue goodness into her mouth=
She repeated it thrice, letting herself soak. It cooled her throbbing hea=
d and soothed her thirst. Her hands thrashed like a dog, lapping up a drink=
after a day at the park. It took her a moment to realise she had split it =
all down her dress and a second more for the fear to kick in.=20

Glaring at the now suspicious liquid, it's presence under her scrutiny. If =
it was poisoned she would die, if not it still felt tainted.=20

She grew bored at the brook so took to the second path. Closer and closer t=
he stone block approached. Soon it's shape formed. It was a vast structure,=
similar to a castle without doors or windows. She passed through a tunnel =
to get inside. The walls intricately decorated with swirls and flowers. On =
the bottom of the walls was a depiction of small creatures. Ella saw one of=
these at the start of her journey. It was hunched over, gawking at her fro=
m the side. Its short stubby face and strange beady eyes made it a menace i=
n her mind.=20

The tunnel finally stopped, opening up to the true garden. It was full to t=
he brim with a maze. In the section flowers sat inside, others had stone st=
atues. Ella had never seen something like this. The bushes a bright lime th=
at contrasted with the deep maroon red of the roses. In the furthest corner=
s were white, orange and yellow roses. They swayed in the wind, water trick=
led down the petals as the gardener watered the plants.=20

They had their back turned, busy whistling away as they gave the flowers a =
drink.=20

"Excuse me" Ella lifted a hand, calling to the man, when he did not turn sh=
e tried again but louder "Excuse me, sir!"=20

And again, she was ignored. Walking to him she stepped on a rouge flower bu=
d. The gardener had left his basket at the entrance to the shrub maze. It w=
as brimmed full with seeds.=20

"Do you like destroying poor flowers?" Finally she was acknowledged. The ma=
n stood to his full high of four inches and a bit. His face wrinkled at the=
cheeks, moving his brows to a scowl. "Where did you come from?" After givi=
ng her a once over the man had turned back to his flowers, bumbling around =
with ease.=20

Completely puzzled, Ella thought of an answer but none came to mind.=20

"Which was the first path you took?" He spoke for her, edging her to the co=
rrect answer.=20

"The red path, I think"=20

"You think?" Finishing up his plants he gave her a nod. "The first room you=
 see, turn to the left"

Again Ella was puzzled. There were no rooms in front of her, only the maze.=
Her eyes snapped to the bushes, it's design seemed vaguely familiar. She d=
id as the man said and continued on the path left. There were two options, =
a bright path and a dark path.=20

"You came through the garden doors, correct?"=20

Ella gave a nod he couldn't see. She wandered forward and ended up in a ros=
e patch. It was a bright white, different from the others. These roses didn=
't make it past the bush walls, hiding in the shadows. At the edge of the r=
oom there was a long fountain leading around the maze like a moat. She had =
all she needed, she had a map. Patting her pockets she searched for her not=
ebook but found it missing- when she fell down the whole it must have slipp=
ed out lost forever. Now all Ella had was her mind, faulty as it may be, it=
was her only chance to get out of here.=20

The gardener shimmied himself over, pointing down to the maze ?This door ta=
kes you to the back and this door leads to the catacombs?=20

Ella gave a sigh. She was sick of the fifty/fifty but found solace in the f=
act there could be worse puzzles out there. From her view she could see a =
room with a chess pattern floor and another filled with thick plants. Her p=
ath was the easy road, so she kept her complaints to herself. The gardener =
showed her the way forward but gave no advice to how the Labyrinth worked. =
He suggested there was no method to the madness giving a ?it reacts to your=
 actions?=20

Taking in the maze one more time she took a mental note. Repeating the dire=
ctions over and over, Ella felt ready. She stepped out, stretching her legs=
Ella hoped that she would continue on the forest path as she hated the sa=
nd. The gardener told her the directions again, giving a once over. His fro=
wn made it clear he had no faith in her survival, but Ella did not care. El=
la was going to give it her all and come out better and brighter. It crosse=
d her mind that there could be others in the maze, perhaps just as lost as =
she was. Her eyes glued to the red roses. There was one less rose bush in t=
he maze; it changed. Maybe there was one less parsipet---->=20

<!-- There was a posting for a competition in his local coffee shop. Th=
e $1 million prize caught his attention, so he decided, what the heck, and =
he applied. It wouldn?t hurt to try. I will either get accepted or not, he =
thought to himself. There was an audition and a questionnaire to fill out, =
which he obviously passed, since he is here now. I wonder how many people p=
assed. I will never know since I signed that release which disallows me to =
ask any questions, either before or after the contest.=20
He stood there, shifting from foot to foot. Which one? He thinks. He=
stretches out his hand, no not that one. His palms are sweaty. Which one? =
He turns around; he has the feeling of impatience behind him; but there?s n=
o one there. He stretches out his hand again; it?s shaking. Why am I here? =
He asks himself. It was my choice, I have to do it; I will do it. He opens =
the door on his right.=20
All he can see is a very long corridor, with doors on each side. It s=
eems to go on forever. The doors are each numbered and there is a also sign=
on each door. The first door on his right says, ?Enter here. Nothing to fe=
ar.? What could that mean? He asks himself. Since I don?t like watching sca=
ry movies, I definitely will not want to open this door. He then turns to d=
oor number 2, on his left. It says ?Do you really want to?? I?m not sure, =
he thinks. What can be behind this door? He goes to the next one. It says,?=
You can see clearly now.? That could mean it?s an optometrist?s office, but=
I don?t need glasses, he says to himself. The 4th door he comes to says, ?=
Are you hungry?? I am a bit, he thinks, but I can wait. It might be somethi=
ng I don?t like. The next door #5, says, ?Want to have a good time?? This c=
an mean so many things. It could be a party of sorts, or a car: I could use=
a new car he thinks. He moves on to the next door. It says, ?Have you ever=
seen this before?? Whoa, the possibilities could be endless. Not for me. =
On to door number 7. This one says,? Alice in Wonderland.? I remember that =
story and I am not ready to go underground. No thanks.=20

He looks down the hallway. He cannot see the end. Wow, how long will =
this take? I guess as soon as I open one door then it will be over, I thin=
k. I hope. Door number 8 says, ?It grows on trees.? This is an easy one to=
predict. It either means fruit or money. He hesitated quite a long time at=
this door. Who couldn?t use extra money? He thinks. But I think I will jus=
t continue on. Door number 9, wow, it says, ?Are you sure? Are you really s=
ure about this?? No, no, I?m not. I admit I am afraid of the unknown, but t=
he $1 million dollar prize was too good to at least try. Okay, next one. It=
says,? Aren?t they cute?? I just bet that there are either puppies or kitt=
ens behind this door, no, not for me.=20
He looks down the hall again, and is sure he can see an end. OK, carr=
y on. This door says, ?Can you hear that?? What? He puts his ear to the doo=
r. I can?t hear a thing. He stands there for a minute longer, then shrugs a=
nd continues on.=20
He keeps looking back to where he entered this corridor. There was no=
sign of the door he entered through. Odd, he says out loud. I guess there =
is only one thing to do, continue.=20
The next door, number 12 said, ?Is this the way?? Could this be the e=
xit? He ponders. Or, maybe when I walk in I will fall, like there will be e=
mpty space. Well, I?m not ready to end this yet. So, on to the next one. It=
says, ?Walk along the straight and narrow.? I bet I would have to walk alo=
ng a plank, can?t do, I do not have good balance at all. He?s thinks.=20
He can now see the end of the corridor; but cannot count how many doo=
rs are left.=20
The next one says, ?A perfect fit?? I wonder if it?s a clothing store=
So, when I win the million I can go shopping, so then I will go to the n=
ext door. ?Are you comfy?? it says. I definitely could use a sit down, but =
not now. I?m anxious to get this over with. What?s next? He wonders.=20
I wonder who thought up this competition and how many people qualifie=
d. Or was I the only qualifier? I didn?t see any other people around. Proba=
bly not, what kind of a competition would this be if only one person entere=
d? The only way to find out would be to get to the end of this corridor and=
then decide which door I want to open. So, the next door. It says, ?What i=
s that smell? He sniffs at the door for a minute but doesn?t smell anything=
Of course, I have to open the door to find out what it is that smells. I =
think I?ll also pass this one by. Now, to the last door, number 16. It says=
,? Who?s there?? It must mean that someone is in there. I don?t think I wan=
t to meet anyone.=20

He is startled by an incoming announcement. ?You have read all the do=
ors, so now it is time to decide. Choose carefully.?

After walking back up and down the very long corridor to re-read the =
door signs, he finally makes a decision. He walks over to door number 8 whi=
ch says, ?It grows on trees.? For a moment it is very dark so he cannot see=
a thing. It takes him some time to accustom his sight and what he sees sho=
cks him. Do you mean to say I went through all that just to get back to whe=
re I started? As he is mumbling to himself, the person who made the announc=
ement comes up to him and said, ?Congratulations, well done?. You made the =
right choice. Just follow me and I will present you with the prize money. I=
t will be in the form of a cheque, of course. Wow, I won, yippee! But, I do=
n?t understand this, he says to himself, but I will go along with him. I ho=
pe this is not one big joke.--->=20
