This is about a good a Ball sign-and-trade as we could hope for. This contract number had been out there ahead of free agency, and the trade return going to New Orleans isn?t all that much. Satoransky was always expected to be a goner, and while I wouldn?t have minded having Temple back as a veteran on the wing, losing him in this deal isn?t an issue. The Bulls then only had to include a second-round pick to finish off the deal instead of coughing up another first.

Ball isn?t the answer to all of the Bulls? problems at point guard, but he?s a nice fit next to Zach LaVine (great ready for some sick alley-oops) and has been on the front office?s radar for a while. He just had the best season of his career by averaging 14.6 points, 5.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 37.8% from 3-point land on over eight attempts per game. He immediately becomes the best passer on the team and has defensive potential.

There have been injury concerns in his career and he has his flaws creating offense in the half court, but he?s still just 23 years old with room to grow his game. This is a nice start to free agency for the Bulls, and there?s much more work to be done. It would be nice to get something back in a Lauri Markkanen sign-and-trade, and the Bulls will have the mid-level (over $9.5 million) and bi-annual exceptions (over $3.7 million) at their disposal. The Bulls are hard-capped at around $143 million but aren?t that close to it.

In other news, it does look like Daniel Theis is going to be heading to the Rockets, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

The 2020-21 NBA season has felt a bit weird. Sure, there is a pandemic, but what is even weirder to me is that there is no Vince Carter. With his retirement, there goes the last remaining piece of that era of basketball stars that I grew up with.

Carter is the first player in NBA history to suit up in four different decades. When his peers were fading into the sunset one by one, enjoying the life of retirement, Carter was still dunking well into his 40s. Sure, he bounced from team to team in the later part of his career, looking like a shell of of himself, but he was still a mostly-solid contributor nonetheless. He also made an impact far beyond the court, becoming a beloved veteran leader and mentor of the younger generations. The fact that his career ended prematurely due to the pandemic is a huge shame ? a legend like Carter deserved a proper sendoff, a whole arena on its feet and chanting his name.

I?m by no means a diehard VC fan, but it?s hard not to appreciate both his greatness and the legacy he left on the court. That?s why it?s so difficult to believe that such a respectable, popular legend was so hated by the team that viewed him as their franchise star for years. The Toronto Raptors drafted Carter fifth overall in 1998. At the time, Toronto was the league?s baby, with only three years of history. The team, and, more importantly, the city, desperately needed a franchise icon, a superstar who could represent them to the wider world. Carter became that icon. He was an international name with his out-of-this-world dunking prowess and mesmerizing style of play. Air Canada Center was packed full every time he played. He quite literally single-handedly put Canada on the map in the NBA, turning the Toronto Raptors into a force to be reckoned with.

But fast forward to 2004, and a disgruntled Carter had requested a trade. The Raptors eventually granted it, and Carter moved on from Toronto with a fair amount of rancor. What happened? What went so badly that made Carter hated by the exact fanbase that had viewed him as an icon? Why did Carter want out of the franchise that he so painstakingly built? If you?re curious, we chronicled the feud in Beef History, so scroll up to see all the dramatic, meaty details for yourself.

While you do that, I?m going to go off and be depressed for a bit, knowing that the era of basketball and superstars that I grew up with are now gone for good.

The Suns agreed to a deal with veteran center JaVale McGee worth reportedly $5 million. For McGee, that?s more money than he has made in any of the last five years. For the Suns, who are over the cap and only using cap exceptions to sign players, that number is so big it can only come from the Mid-level exception, leaving the Suns out of the bidding for any more free agents who want more than $4 million per year.

McGee, 32, is a nice add, don?t get me wrong. He?s a quality small-role player on great teams. In the last five years, McGee has gathered three championship rings with the Warriors (2) and Lakers (1) and now could win a Gold Medal with Team USA as a small-role center who plays old-school style.

I like JaVale McGee as a backup over Frank Kaminsky. He?s athletic and long, at 7?0? tall with a 7?6? wingspan and the ability to soar above everyone for a block or a dunk. He rebounds well, blocks shots, and delivers the kind of slam dunks you want Deandre Ayton doing. The way Ayton morphs and emulates his teammates skills make me wonder if McGee?s maximization of his own athleticism will inspire Ayton to do the same.

What I don?t like is the size of the contract. The Suns clearly had to outbid at least one other contender for McGee?s services, but why bite the bullet on day one rather than pivot to another option on Day 2 who could cost less?
