ifying out-of-date statistics and building a model to support vaccination t=
hat has questionable assumptions work to support rapid deployment of two do=
ses of mRNA to all healthy kids aged 12 to 17. That may be the CDC?s policy=
pursuit, and one we are sympathetic to. However, distorting evidence to ac=
hieve this result is a form of a noble lie. Accurately reporting current r=
isks to adolescents, and exploring other dosing possibilities, is part of t=

We worry that vaccine policy among supporters of vaccines is increasingly a=
nchored to the irrational views of those who oppose them?by always pursuing=
the opposite. Exaggerating the risk of the virus in the moment and failing=
to explore middle ground positions appear to be the antithesis of the anti=
-vax movement, which is an extremist effort to refuse vaccination. This see=
ms a reflexive attempt to vaccinate at all costs?by creating fear in the pu=
blic (despite falling adolescent rates) and pushing the notion that two dos=
es of mRNA at the current dose level or nothing at all are the only two cho=
ices?a logical error called the fallacy of the excluded middle. Noble lies?=
small untruths?yield unpredictable outcomes. Nietzsche once wrote, ?Not tha=
t you lied to me, but that I no longer believe you, has shaken me.? Public =
health messaging is predicated on trust, which overcomes the enormous compl=
exity of the scientific literature, creating an opportunity to communicate =
initiatives effectively. Still, violation of this trust renders the communi=
cation unreliable. When trust is shattered, messaging is no longer clear an=
d straightforward, and instead results in the audience trying to reverse-en=
gineer the statement based on their view of the speaker?s intent. Simply pu=
t, noble lies can rob confidence from the public, leading to confusion, a l=
oss of credibility, conspiracy theories, and obfuscated policy. Noble lies =
are a trap. We cannot predict the public?s behavior, and loss of trust is d=
evastating. The general population is far too skeptical to blindly follow t=
he advice of experts, and far too intelligent to be easily duped. Future Te=

The measures haven?t been universally accepted, with people demonstrating a=
gainst the requirements in France and Italy. The protests have been relativ=
ely small so far, but officials in both countries and elsewhere in Europe a=
re closely monitoring developments. U.S. states and cities have also starte=
d to act to encourage vaccination and try to tap down eventual infections. =
This week, California and New York City said some public employees will be =
required to get vaccinated or take frequent Covid-19 tests. The Biden admin=
istration is expected to announce on Thursday that federal employees must g=
et vaccinated or be regularly tested for Covid-19, according to a person fa=
miliar with the discussions. The EU and the U.S. have both faced declining =
vaccination rates, but the drop has been much less pronounced on the contin=
ent, where the total number of daily shots has dropped by 28% over the past=
six weeks. In the U.S., about 500,000 shots are currently being administer=
ed a day, an 85% drop from the average 3.4 million a day reached in early A=
pril. Like with U.S. states, there is a wide difference in the vaccination =
rate between EU countries. Denmark has given at least one dose to 72% of it=
s population. Among the more populous member countries, Spain has reached 6=
7% and Italy 63%. In Bulgaria, 15% of the population has received at least =
one dose. The U.S. still has a slight lead in the percent of people who are=

f masks from a basic, precautionary mitigation strategy to a badge of polit=
ical allegiance. President Donald Trump was reluctant to wear a mask and ju=
stified his behavior by referring to Fauci's comments from the <em>60 =
