w surprises, but the reality is that this season has so far been the most i=
nteresting championship in years.=20
Funnily enough, it?s this backdrop that Codemasters has found itself compet=
ing against with its own fictional drama, introducing a fully-fledged story=
mode to F1 2021 for the first time in the series. The end result falls a l=
ittle short of being as dramatic as the real thing, but it?s a well-execute=
d and welcome new way to play that joins the series? wide array of existing=
modes and makes for another excellent package ? albeit one that needs a bi=
t of extra content to bring it in line with the real-life 2021 season.Codem=
asters flirted with the concept of a story mode two years ago in F1 2019 wi=
th its brief, F2-themed intro and its curated set of late-race scenarios an=
d first-person cutscenes. There, however, it was simply a short sequence of=
events bolted onto the beginning of the standard career experience. In F1 =
2021 the story is a standalone mode akin to The Journey from FIFA 17 to 19,=
or Fight Night Champion?s titular Champion Mode ? although it?s never quit=
e as sentimental as the former or as rousing as the latter.=20
Get to the Point
Dubbed Braking Point, F1 2021?s story focuses on a pair of very different d=
rivers: rookie Aiden Jackson, a talented Brit who still has some key things=
to learn about the F1 paddock, and Casper Akkerman, a Dutch journeyman wit=
h an illustrious career that?s mostly behind him. Depending on your choice,=
Jackson and Akkerman will race for one of five selectable teams ? Williams=
, Haas, Alfa Romeo, Alpha Tauri, and Racing Point (which becomes Aston Mart=
in during the story). These fictional drivers will unseat the real-life dri=
vers in your choice of team, but the rest of the grid will be made up of ac=
tual F1 stars from the 2020 and 2021 seasons ? except for one. Another driv=
er from one of the four remaining selectable teams will be replaced with Co=
demasters? resident F1 reptile, Devon Butler, who returns from his brief ap=
pearance as the antagonist at the beginning of F1 2019 for a slightly bigge=
r role this time around.Beginning in F2 in 2019, Braking Point sees Jackson=
graduate to F1 for 2020, where he immediately clashes with old dog Akkerma=
n after a careless on-track incident. The discord between the two is only e=
xacerbated by Akkerman?s general saltiness at what he perceives as preferen=
tial treatment for Jackson, much to the chagrin of likable team liaison Bri=
an Doyle (and much to the delight of the devious Devon Butler).=20
The races in Braking Point vary from lights to flag events to mid-race situ=
ations, each with different challenges to achieve. You may be salvaging pos=
itions after some earlier misfortune, catching a certain car within a speci=
fic number of laps, or finishing ahead of a nominated team. All of these ra=
cing scenarios are weaved into the needs of the story itself, which plays o=
ut via both cutscenes and a series of phone calls.--->=20

m two distinct pools is quite fun, but Roguebook's heroes aren't all that m=
echanically interesting. I didn't want to explore Seifer's rage mechanic in=
the same way I became obsessed with orb strategies for the Defect in Slay =
the Spire, for instance. Many of Roguebook's best ideas feel game-wide rath=
er than hero-driven. Compounding this, having cards from two heroes in your=
deck makes aiming for a narrow strategy particularly difficult.</span></p>=

<p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">You're rewarded for having more cards =
in your deck too, with new talent choices unlocked at certain thresholds, a=
nd this is very much a mixed blessing. With this style of game, the more ca=
rds you draft, the more watered down your strategy will inevitably become. =
Deciding how large your deck should be is an interesting push and pull each=
run, but having rewards tied to larger decks doesn't necessarily make Rogu=
ebook a better game.</span></p>=20

et access to New Run +. This Epilogue has 15 levels of difficulty to work t=
hrough, and a whole host of modifiers to unlock ? and then select ? that wi=
ll radically alter each run. Your lead hero might take damage each time he =
or she plays a card, for instance, or the back enemy may always start steal=
thed. It's an interesting approach, but I found myself wishing each row was=
unlocked at once, as opposed to unlocking each modifier individually, as s=
ome were much more appealing to attempt than others.</span></p>=20
<p><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">The higher the Epilogue level you clea=
r, the more Pages you're rewarded, and these are spent on significant meta =
game upgrades like boosting the starting health of your heroes, adding more=
energy wells to each map and increasing the likelihood of rarer cards or t=
reasures dropping. For the most part the embellishments help make you more =
powerful for future runs, but you may want to think twice before unlocking =
some of the options. Randomising the cards in your starter deck, for instan=
ce, certainly has high roll potential, but it can also leave you at a disad=
vantage. There's something to be said for starting with a vanilla deck that=
's reliable enough in the early game and that you then build on, while tran=
