<!--On the day before the accident, Milad Salama could hardly contain his e=
xcitement for the kindergarten class trip. ?Baba,? he said, addressing his =
father, Abed, ?I want to buy food for the picnic tomorrow.? Abed took his f=
ive-and-a-half-year-old son to a nearby convenience store, buying him a bot=
tle of the Israeli orange drink Tapuzina, a tube of Pringles, and a chocola=
te Kinder Egg, his favorite dessert.=20
Early the next morning, Milad?s mother, Haifa, helped her fair-skinned, san=
dy-haired boy into his school uniform: gray pants, a white-collared shirt, =
and a gray sweater bearing the emblem of his private elementary school, Nou=
r al-Houda, or ?light of guidance.? Milad?s nine-year-old brother, Adam, ol=
d enough to walk to school on his own, had already left. Milad hurried to f=
inish his breakfast, gathered his lunch and picnic treats, and rushed out t=
o board the school bus. Abed was still in bed.=20
On most days, Abed worked for the Israeli phone and Internet service provid=
er Bezeq. But that morning, he and his cousin had plans to go to Jericho. T=
hey stopped at the nearby butcher?s, in Dahiyat al-Salaam, ?neighborhood of=
peace,? beneath the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusa=
lem. The owner, Atef, was a friend of Abed?s, and it was unusual for him no=
t to be at the shop. Abed asked an employee to check where Atef was. Atef l=
ived in a different part of municipal Jerusalem, Kufr Aqab, a dense urban n=
eighborhood of tall apartment towers that, like Dahiyat al-Salaam, is cut o=
ff from the rest of the city by an Israeli military checkpoint and a gray t=
wenty-six-foot-high concrete wall. To avoid the daily traffic jams and what=
are sometimes waits of several hours at the Qalandia checkpoint, Atef drov=
e to his work through a far more circuitous route, following the snaking pa=
th of the separation barrier. She is in a Toyota RAV4, somewhere in the mou=
ntains of south-central Yemen. It is hot, desert hot, and the AC doesn?t wo=
rk. There is no road. The driver maneuvers the car through dry riverbeds, w=
hich show the cracks of prior floods.=20
In the back seat, Wafa Almaktari tries not to throw up. She tries not to th=
ink about the men with guns who will stop them, demand money, and search th=
eir baggage over 50 times in the next 16 hours. If they don?t like her, or =
she cannot pay, she may disappear in these hills. She tries not to think ab=
out the fact that the driver, hired privately for $300, does not have a map=
=20
How the hell does he know where he is, in the middle of the mountains? she =
wonders. But the alternative ? a bus that blunders at even slower speeds, a=
nd attracts even more attention at armed checkpoints ? was unthinkable. She=
has to get through the mountains as quickly as possible, because Moutaz is=
waiting for her.=20
It is June 2019. Moutaz Al-Qershi, her fianc=E9, lives in the northern Yeme=
ni capital city of Sana?a. He was going to meet her when she landed in the =
port city of Aden. But she knows she can?t trust herself not to fling her a=
rms around him and kiss him. In the U.S., where Wafa has lived for the last=
four years, public affection is normal for young couples, but in Yemen, un=
married couples can?t publicly embrace. She told him to wait at her family?=

<!--In 2021, the small Middle Eastern nation of Yemen ranks as the world?=
s largest humanitarian disaster. Civil strife has mired the country in fami=
ne, cholera outbreaks, and violence. Since 2015, a complex set of combatant=
s has battled for control: armed rebels in the north, known as the Houthis,=
who rule the capital; Saudi Arabian forces, who are determined to stop the=
Houthis; Al-Qaeda in the Arabic Peninsula, who rose up briefly to fill a p=
ower vacuum; and southern separatists in the port city of Aden.=20
Wafa and Moutaz met before the war. Although a poor country, Yemen had been=
a democratic one. During the Arab Spring, protesters had demanded reforms,=
leading to a transitional government. In 2014, the transitional president =
was struggling to stabilize the country. Soon, international embassies woul=
d begin to close, and the militant group Ansar Allah, often referred to as =
the Houthis, would take the capital. Saudi Arabia would step in to oppose t=
he Houthis, whom they saw as Iranian proxies. By 2015, ports would be block=
aded, airports closed, and cities bombed. At the time, she was in high schoo=
l and he studied electrical engineering at Sana?a University. Wafa had a hu=
ge, trusting smile, expressive eyes, and a laugh that rose up out of her ch=
est. Moutaz was a serious, slender introvert, prone to long conversations o=
n mathematical concepts. He was detail-oriented; she was all big ideas. She=
recalls how taken aback he was during their first interaction: ?All the id=
eas that I tell him, and my hijab is not very on point. ? I don?t have make=
up on my face. So he?s like, you?re not normal.?
Despite the differences in their education, Moutaz didn?t intimidate her.=
=20
?It was this very weird chemistry that was between us,? she says.=20
They kept their relationship secret. Young Yemenis couldn?t date without be=
ing engaged or married, but the two of them did ?all the crazy things in a =
very conservative society,? Wafa says. On one of their dates, Moutaz though=
t it would be romantic to ride Arabian stallions. The huge horses terrified=
Wafa. They were out in a sunlit field, beyond the city limits, far from pr=
ying eyes. She remembers watching him feed the animals, showing gentle care=
?Although I was scared, around him I was very safe,? she recalls.=20
At the time, she had been suffering from tonsillitis and had been told not =
to eat any ice cream to avoid a possible surgery. On the way home, Moutaz s=
topped for a treat.=20
?I was like, oh, this is love. You?re giving me ice cream that I?m not supp=
osed to eat, so I know you love me,? Wafa recalls with a smile.=20
That subtle spirit of rebellion would permeate their relationship for the n=
ext seven years. Soon what divided them would not be family objections, but=
the policies and decisions of world nations: who allied with whom in the w=
ar, who offered visas for Yemeni citizens, who blocked the airports. Surrou=
nded by immigration restrictions and bound by national policies they cannot=
control, Wafa and Moutaz have refused to give up on each other. For them, =
love has become a kind of defiance of boundaries, borders, and rules. Separ=
ated for years, they search for ways back to each other.=20
* * *
In the movies, love resolves itself quickly: Two chemicals combine, and eit=
her reject each other or dissolve into a single solution. It?s more difficu=
lt to convey the reality on screen. Love hits, and we wait, watching the co=
lors creep up the pH strip, waiting for the hiss of reaction. Sometimes we =
know what the result will be, but still must wait for proof.=20
Most people wouldn?t watch a film of all those empty hours. We like the cat=
harsis, the moment of triumph, the release of tension: a climactic kiss in =
the rain. But for many people whose loved ones live across borders, separat=
ed by visas, wars, or financial circumstances, there is no such easy resolu=
tion. Patience becomes the story.--->=20
