hints and clues Gimple kept dropping throughout the mid-season finale: it's=
all bullshit. The episode featured exactly ONE good scene (Carl's conversa=
tion with Negan at the Alexandria gates), while Carl spent the majority of =
the hour-long finale stumbling about Alexandria as the effects department k=
ept blowing up cars and houses all over town. He wrote his dad a note, foun=
d Enid's JSS message to him, offered to die because ?he's already dying?, a=
nd let's not forget the requisite flashback conversation he had with Rick a=
bout ?how it's gotta be'. Now let's think back to the season premiere and R=
ick's dreamlike sequence of a peaceful future with his family, intercut wit=
h closeups of teary-eyed papa Grimes mourning someone's death, or maybe sim=
ply realizing he was just defeated. How is this anything other than a cheap=
fake-out, whose only purpose was to blind-side us with Carl's death? This =
isn't good storytelling, it's just the Negan S6 finale scene all over again=

lor: #ffffff;">Baywatch</span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">I don't=
know what drove me to watch this one ? call it nostalgia, or just blame it=
on the fact that I'd watch Dwayne Johnson in pretty much anything. Whateve=
r the case, it was an utterly ridiculous movie. But damn if it wasn't fun t=
o watch. I was half-expecting it to be the beach version of 21 Jump Street,=
but unfortunately it was neither as funny, nor meta enough, despite the (m=
ostly sad) cameos by Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff.</span><br /><spa=
n style=3D"color: #ffffff;">The CGI was laughable, the plot was just silly,=
and what it lacks in funny dialogue it makes up for in crude jokes and hal=
f-decent physical comedy. The Rock ione charismatic hunk of a man, but even=
he wasn't enough to carry this thing. Oh, and Zac Effron is ripped now, so=
there's that.</span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Berlin Syndrome<=
/span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">This one came highly rated, but=
simply left me cold. The plot wasn't anything groundbreaking: girl meets b=
oy, boy turns out to be a psychopath who locks her up in his apartment.</sp=
an><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Not only was it incredibly slow, b=
ut the heroine's actions were simply infuriating, to the point that instead=
of feeling sorry for her ordeals, I just wanted to slap her across the fac=
e. She squandered so many chances to escape, and when [spoiler alert] she =
finally does, it mostly happens off screen. Meh.</span><br /><span style=3D=
"color: #ffffff;">The ?meh'</span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Hou=
nds of Love</span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Not as bad as Berli=
n Syndrome, this australian flick follows a similar motif: a horrible coupl=
e abduct a teenage girl and lock her up in their rundown home in some backw=
oods australian town. What's interesting here is the dynamic between the gi=
rl and her captors, particularly the woman, who seemed gung-ho in following=
the plan out of desperate love for this godawful man who rapes and kills g=
irls for sport.</span><br /><span style=3D"color: #ffffff;">Her co-dependen=
cy is shaken when she starts getting jealous of the young girl, and she sta=
rts questioning her man's actions, enough for the girl to exploit this rift=
to her advantage. While well shot, the misery depicted in the movie, combi=
ned with the very slow pace, makes it an uncomfortable viewing experience ?=
which I guess was the point. So it wasn't a bad film; it wasn't wasn't fun=
to watch.</span></p>=20
