Hi All,
As an offshoot of a project to do customised scans of Biology-related
newsgroups for myself and others, and since I've got a few spare megs of
filespace (at least temporarily), I also set up a database of the
following comp.os.linux newsgroups:
comp.os.linux.admin
comp.os.linux.announce
comp.os.linux.hardware
comp.os.linux.help
comp.os.linux.misc
comp.os.linux.networking
comp.os.linux.setup
comp.os.linux.x
mainly to help people get up and running with Linux. The HOWTOS and other
Docs are extremely good sources of info, but typically you have equipment
that isn't mentioned or you KNOW that someone has just dealt with the
problem, but you didn't save the post and now it's digital dust. So,
herewith, a partial answer....
*All* Postings to these newsgroups are grabbed every night, stripped of
leading gibberish, and re-indexed. Since these newsgroups are very
high-traffic (about 0.3-5MB/day), I don't know how long I'll be able to
keep it going as a comprehensive db - It will probably be necessary to
start rolling it over once it hits a certain size.
And note - I've got no postings from before a few days ago, although if
someone has kept an archive, I'd consider rolling it into the db, space
permitting.
But until then, and before it gets announced to the general Linux
population, you're welcome to try it out. I'll be watching the hit-stats
with interest to see how my fragile little PC will keep up.
Also, NO GUARANTEES! The db stays up as long as the PC holds together,
disk space allows, and the (very dumb) scripts don't break. Expect
delays...
The particulars are:
host: ih34.hsis.uci.edu (128.200.5.34)
port: 210 (std)
Access: Mosaic (wais support builtin)
Netscape (wais support NOT builtin - have to use a proxy BUT:
use same host as a wais proxy, port 80 (but with patience there
are some bugs in the proxy code that I'm also trying to work out -
sometimes it works fine, other times it times out or fails
completely.
Dedicated wais clientssuch as waissearch, swais, WAIStation,
Xwais, MacWAIS, WAIS for Mac, WinWAIS, etc, available from
ftp://ftp.wais.com/pub/freeware
(I have also built some Linux clients with the freewais dist).
Gopher - Some gophers also recognize WAIS src files as such and will
respond appropriately when pointed at them.
URL:
wais://ih34.hsis.uci.edu/linux?query boolean query boolean query boolean
ie:
wais://ih34.hsis.uci.edu/linux?scsi and adaptec and eisa
The wais src file is:
Begin File ---- Begin File ---- Begin File ---- Begin File ---- Begin File ----
