SplashLindsay Lohan smiles outside her community service in Los Angeles. Lindsay Lohan
turned down a number of lucrative offers to host New Year's Eve
celebrations in a bid to change her party-girl image. The "Mean Girls" star,
who is still on probation after being convicted of theft, is desperate
to continue the progress she made so far with her judge so
has opted to spend a quiet night at home with a few
close friends on Dec. 31, TMZ reported Tuesday. It means the star, who
recently posed nude for the cover of Playboy, could be potentially missing

APProponents of condom use during the filming of X-rated movies in Los
Angeles garnered enough signatures to call for a June referendum that, if
passed, would require condom use on porn sets throughout the city. But proponents
must first get past a lawsuit filed by the city to prevent
the ballot measure."We're thrilled we've passed this initial threshold," Ged Kenslea, a
spokesman for AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the ballot's main backer, told The Los
Angeles Times of qualifying on the ballot. "We believe we're going to
prevail in court and look forward to taking this issue directly to
the voters."To the reported surprise of city council members, Los Angeles city
attorney Carmen Trutanich filed suit earlier this month to keep the AIDS
Healthcare Foundation proposal off the ballot. Trutanich reportedly argued that only the
state can legally impose the safe-sex rule and charge fees to pay
inspections, so the city and county can't be forced to monitor compliance. The

its wing, overturned and caught fire Wednesday as it tried to land
in deep fog in southern Kyrgyzstan, leaving 31 people injured, officials said. The
Soviet-built Tu-134 operated by local carrier Kyrgyzstan had flown from the capital
Bishkek and was trying to land at the airport in the city
of Osh, said Ilyas Egemberdiyev, a spokesman for the airline.Rescuers quickly extinguished
the fire and evacuated 82 passengers and six crewmembers. Emergency Situations Minister

One Oregon police chief was killed when a man allegedly took the
officer's gun and shot him in the head. A policeman in Arizona
was fatally shot when he went to a suburban Phoenix apartment complex
to help a probation officer. And two South Dakota officers were killed
in a shootout after a traffic stop. The number of fatalities from departments
across the country caused by firearms made 2011 one of the deadliest
years in recent history for U.S. law enforcement.Across the nation, 173 officers
died in the line of duty, up 13 percent from 153 the
year before, according to numbers as of Wednesday compiled by the National
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The nonprofit group that tracks police deaths also
reported that 68 federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire
in 2011, a 15 percent jump from last year when 59 were
