Greetings fellow Linuxers,
I'd like to invite any interested parties to join a new mailing list
sponsored by Shrimpton Consulting. The list is open to any and all
persons who must provide daily support for Linux in a business environment.
One of the greatest difficulties in "selling" Linux to the business
community is its lack of organized support. Please note the word
organized. While the Usenet newsgroups provide excellent support for Linux
this is not sufficient to convince skeptical IS managers to implement the
most excellent Linux system. This list will attempt to address this
unfortunate problem.
My goal is to provide a forum for those faced with the problems of
supporting Linux in a business environment and to foster the development
of some sort of coherent support structure that can be "sold" to corporate
IS.
I have the somewhat vague idea of creating a virtual help-desk that IS
managers and Linux system admins. can consult when needed. This list is
not meant to replace any existing newsgroup or serve as an alternative.
Nor is it intended as a profit making venture in itself. The purpose is
to ensure that Linux professionals are available to support each other in
the support of their clients and companies. List members should already
have a sound understanding of Linux and Unix in general and be actively
engaged in supporting business systems in either a consulting or employee
situation. In other words, if you have to ask "How do I install Doom on
Linux?", this is not the place for you. However, we don't want to be elitist,
so I guess the only real requirement is that you are somehow making money
supporting Linux.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea or is something that is needed please
subscribe to:
majordomo@os.com with the message subscribe linux-support.
When we have 10 or so subscriptions I'll post something to get the ball
rolling. I think the first order of business is to try and figure out how
this virtual support system should work. My idea is to have a low-volume,
low-noise, high quality support group that is viewed as a valuable resource
and, in addition to its own merits, is usable as a selling point for the
members services.
Even if this list is really not for you, or if you feel a suitable forum
already exists, please e-mail me your suggestions, flames, comments, etc.
Thanks,
Craig Shrimpton
