Subject: Runas Version 1.0 available
Organization: PANIX Public Access Internet and Unix, NYC
Summary: New program to run a program as if another user ran it
Keywords: sbin utility su runas
Approved: linux-announce@tc.cornell.edu (Lars Wirzenius)
Followup-to: comp.os.linux.setup

I have just released version 1.0 of 'runas', a utility that allows
the super-user to run a program as if another user executed it. It is
similar to 'su', but easier to use for routine tasks.

In addition, it allows the priority of the executed program to be
modified. It also allows standard input, output, and error to be redirected
or closed. The target program can optionally be executed in its own process
group. The program's initial directory can be specified.

Runas was developed to allow a system running a mud that was
user-maintained to easily execute the mud from an rc script. It has numerous
other uses, including allowing super-users to easily and safely execute
untrusted programs.

It is available at ftp.epinet.com in
/pub/linux/sources/sbin/ as runas-1.0.tar.gz

The following is an unofficial lsm style info-sheet.
