Several prominent Republican senators accused their GOP colleagues of "secretly"
negotiating a sweeping immigration overhaul, urging them to open up about
the details by next week.The letter from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary
Committee marked the latest flare-up in the GOP caucus over the immigration
plan, which has not yet been introduced. Republican negotiators have urged
their colleagues not to pre-judge the proposal, but others are getting frustrated
by the lack of hard details and concern that majority Democrats will
try to "rush" the bill through after it's introduced."We believe it is
critical that the public and the entire Senate body be given adequate
time to read and analyze the contents of any immigration bill put
forth by the majority," the senators wrote in the letter Thursday to

no later than close of business Monday, and asked for a caucus-wide
briefing early next week "so that all members can raise concerns and
questions before the deal is finalized."In response, Rubio, R-Fla., said

May 1979.The falling participation rate tarnished the only apparent good
news in the jobs report the Labor Department released Friday: The unemployment
rate dropped to a four-year low of 7.6 percent in March from
7.7 in February.People without a job who stop looking for one are
no longer counted as unemployed. That's why the U.S. unemployment rate dropped
in March despite weak hiring. If the 496,000 who left the labor
force last month had still been looking for jobs, the unemployment rate
would have risen to 7.9 percent in March."Unemployment dropped for all the

Group. "It dropped because more workers stopped looking for jobs. It signaled
less confidence and optimism that there are jobs out there."The participation

drop reflects the baby boom generation's gradual move into retirement. But
such demographics aren't the whole answer.Even Americans of prime working
age 25 to 54 years old are dropping out of

KABUL, Afghanistan A NATO airstrike killed 11 Afghan civilians, including
10 children, during a fierce weekend gunbattle with Taliban militants that
also left one U.S. civilian adviser dead in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan
officials said Sunday.The U.S.-led coalition confirmed that airstrikes were
called in by international forces during the Afghan-led operation in a remote
area of Kunar province near the Pakistan border. The coalition said it
was aware of reports that civilians were killed, but had no immediate
information about their deaths.The death of Afghan civilians caught in the
crossfire of battle has been a major point of contention between international
forces and the Afghan government, prompting President Hamid Karzai to ban
his troops from requesting airstrikes earlier this year.Wasifullah Wasify,
a government official in Kunar province, said the airstrike on Saturday
targeted a house and killed 10 children and one woman inside. He
said seven Taliban suspects also were killed and five other women were
