the store. He
challenged al-Akhras, suspicious of her behavior, and she detonated her
explosives at the entrance.A doctor caught up in the blast found the
security guard bleeding to death on the pavement. His legs were gone.
Al-Akhras was dead, and in the rubble, investigators found an unexploded
mortar shell. On Sunday at the Supersol, a security guard stood in Smadar's
old spot. A plaque on the wall commemorated him and Rachel Levy,
a 17-year-old Israeli also killed in the blast.Levy's parents declined to
comment. Almagor said the Levys were upset to learn in the media
about the body of their daughter's killer being returned to the West
Bank.A Supersol cashier on the job Sunday morning was also working the
day of the attack. She started to cry when an Associated Press
journalist tried to talk to her about the blast. Sunday's body transfer
awakened raw memories, and her manager asked AP to leave. In the weeks
before the attack, there were few signs that al-Akhras had become radicalized,
according to her parents. Engaged to be married, she was a good
student from a big, traditional Palestinian family of 10 brothers and sister.
Some of them had been in and out of Israeli jails.Looking back,
the mother said her daughter was restless at the time, that she
couldn't sleep with the noise of gunfire as Israelis and militant groups
engaged each other in fierce battles. At some point, al-Akhras made contact
with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a

party during a press conference in Cape Town, South Africa, Tuesday, Jan.
28, 2014. The former anti-apartheid activist who was close to Steve Biko
and was a World Bank executive merged her party Tuesday with South
Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, and will be its
presidential candidate, challenging the ruling African National Congress
whose popularity has eroded amid corruption scandals and other problems.
(AP Photo/ Nardus Engelbrecht)The Associated PressJOHANNESBURG South Africa's
main opposition party says a plan to join forces with another opposition
group to challenge the ruling party in elections this year has collapsed. The
Democratic Alliance party said in a statement Sunday that opposition leader
Mamphela Ramphele had reneged on a deal to be its presidential candidate
and to merge her smaller party with the Democratic Alliance.Ramphele was
the partner of Steve Biko, the Black Consciousness leader who was tortured
and died in police custody in 1977. She has been an activist,
doctor, academic and World Bank executive. The ruling African National Congress
has been in power since Nelson Mandela was elected president in South
Africa's first all-race elections in 1994. Analysts expect it to win this
year's elections, though possibly with a smaller majority.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> NAPA, Calif. Police in Northern California say they are looking for
the mother of a 4-year-old girl who was found dead in her
bed by officers conducting a welfare check. The Napa Police Department said
they have not been able to find 23-year-old Sara Krueger and her
boyfriend, 26-year-old Scott Warner, since the body of Krueger's daughter
was discovered on Saturday afternoon.Police say neighbors reported seeing
the couple carrying luggage away from the apartment complex where Krueger
and the girl lived earlier Saturday. The department said investigators suspect
foul play in the death of the girl, whom they did not
identify. No details about how she died have been disclosed.Elizabeth Cherchourka,
who manages the apartment complex, told Oakland television station KTVU
that she often saw the girl riding a bicycle around the complex
and that she appeared well cared-for.
RENO, Nev. Religious leaders and farmers in Nevada and Utah held
special events to ask for divine intervention in delivering the West from
drought. The plea to above comes weeks after the federal government declared
parts of 11 parched Western and Central states natural disaster areas.Faith
leaders prayed for snow and rain during a multifaith service Saturday in
the Reno suburb of Sparks. The Utah Farm Bureau asked the public to
join in prayer and fasting for moisture for livestock and crops as
part of its Harvesting Faith event Sunday.Utah dairy farmer Ron Gibson told
the Deseret News that farmers "can't go to the Legislature to ask
for help, (so they instead) decided to go to the guy upstairs."Rajan
Zed, who organized the Nevada service, says it drew Christian, Muslim, Hindu,
Buddhist, Jewish and other faith leaders.
