SALT LAKE CITY Parents say about 50 elementary students in Salt
Lake City had their school lunches thrown out because money was owed
on their food accounts. The lunches costing about $3 were taken from the
children on Tuesday as they arrived at a pay station after cafeteria
workers had given them the food.Parent Erica Lukes said the action was
humiliating and demoralizing for students. The Salt Lake City School District
said the move came after it realized a lot of students at
Uintah (Yoo-IN-tah) Elementary owed money for previous lunches.District
spokesman Jason Olsen said cafeteria servers were not able to see who
was in debt until lunches had already been given to students in
line.He said the lunches were thrown out because they couldn't be served
to another student. Students whose lunches were taken away were given fruit
and milk.
willing
to talk seriously about transferring power or not."Brahimi also repeatedly
said prior to the talks that they should not be open-ended.In Berlin,
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmer called the talks in Geneva
a small step."Of course we are not satisfied with the results achieved
so far," he said, adding that the next step should be an
agreement on local cease-fires and humanitarian corridors.About 200 pro-government
demonstrators gathered Friday outside the U.N. building in Geneva to show
their support for Assad."We are with the peace negotiations. Syria needs
peace," said protester Sabah Kasouha, who used to live in Homs. "When
all the countries stop funding the rebels who came from many countries
to destroy Syria, then we will be fine."Assad's family, from Syria's Alawite
minority, has ruled the country since 1970 while rebellions by Syria's Sunni
majority were crushed. The Syrian uprising began with largely peaceful calls
for reform in March 2011 and escalated into fighting after a military
crackdown. It has since been transformed into a regional proxy war between
Iran and Saudi Arabia supporting opposing sides.Foreign fighters and Islamic
extremists have infiltrated the opposition side, triggering infighting that
has undermined the rebellion against Assad.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> NAIROBI, Kenya A Kenyan military spokesman says most Kenyan troops will
soon leave Somalia's port city of Kismayo which they have controlled since
September 2012 after ousting al-Qaida-linked militants.Col. Willy Wesonga
said Friday the Kenyan army will leave Kismayo "soon." Wesonga said
Sierra Leonean forces will replace the Kenyans who will move to the
Gedo region. He said only small Kenyan units will remain in Kismayo. The
announcement comes as Kenyan forces are accused of misconduct including
that they backed one Somali militia against others in Kismayo. The Mogadishu-based
Somali government demanded a more neutral force in Kismayo.Kenya is among
several African countries that have troops in Somalia in the African Union's
joint force that is backing the country's weak government against a rebellion
by the Islamic extremists of al-Shabab.
