DUBLIN A Northern Ireland police commander says 8,000 officers and three
surveillance drones will protect visiting dignitaries and monitor protests
during the G-8 summit in June.The annual meeting of leaders from the
United States, Britain, Russia, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Canada
is expected to inspire left-wing demonstrations in Northern Ireland and
the neighboring Republic of Ireland. Irish Republican Army splinter groups
also could mount attacks.On Thursday, Assistant Chief Constable Alistair
Finlay told a Catholic-Protestant board that oversees police operations
his force would deploy 4,500 officers and 3,500 more would come from
Britain.The board approved the purchase of three surveillance drones for

First lady Michelle Obama made a deeply personal entrance into the
gun debate Wednesday, the eve of a showdown in Congress, by comparing
herself to the honor student from her hometown killed by gun violence
a week after performing in the presidential inaugural events.Mrs. Obama
told a conference on youth violence that the new gun regulations her
husband proposed in response to Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School
shooting deserve a vote in Congress. But she says reducing daily gun
deaths in places like Chicago also will require an intensive effort by
community leaders.As part of a rare foray into a policy debate, Mrs.
Obama highlighted the case of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, shot to death
in January while hanging out with friends at a park on the
city's South Side, not far from the Obamas' home. Mrs. Obama attended
Pendleton's funeral and said she was struck by how familiar the Pendleton
family seemed to her own."Hadiya Pendleton was me and I was her,"
Mrs. Obama said. "But I got to grow up and go to
Princeton and Harvard Law School and have a career and a family
and the most blessed life I could ever imagine."She said the only
difference between her and the young people killed on the Chicago streets

SAO PAULO The government has set up a task force to
deal with the influx of Haitian immigrants into Brazil's northern state
of Acre.The Justice Ministry says representatives of five ministries and
the federal police comprise the task force that will "regularize the situation
of Haitian immigrants who have entered Brazil illegally."Thursday's announcement
follows a declaration of "social emergency" in Acre state due to the
costs of helping the increasing numbers of Haitians entering the state.It
said that more than 4,000 Haitians have entered Acre since the 2010
earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince. State Justice and Human Rights
Secretary Nilson Mourao says that 1,100 immigrants entered the state just
in the past few days.
