The here introduced "tob" package (Tape Oriented Backup) supercedes the
"backup" package. If you're currently using my backup scripts and if you're
happy with them, don't switch to tob. However, I no longer support the
backup scripts. If you're shopping for a backup driver, which uses your
favorite backup program to access your tapes (say, tar or afio), check out the
newer tob stuff. Tob will let you choose a configuration file for the access
of a backup medium, will let you create volume definition files, and will run
full or differential backups for you, maintain compressed lists of the files
that were backed up, etc.. Oh, you can also restore files from the
backups.
Availability: If you can't wait to get your hands on tob, get tob-0.02.tar.gz
from ftp.icce.rug.nl /pub/unix. This is the primary site. The archive contains
extensive documentation, which is btw. also in WWW format on
http://www.icce.rug.nl/docs/programs/tob.html. If you prefer to get tob from
tsx-11 or sunsite, you'll have to wait 'till the sysops get to moving the
archive to its right place. On sunsite that will (most probably) be
pub/Linux/system/Backup; on tsx-11 I don't know.
