The problem is that we only give newsreading access to hosts at WHOI
that have mit.edu domain names, and the access is set up by listing
the IP address of these WHOI hosts (e.g., "hostinfo menhaden" gives
128.128.28.250, "hostinfo squeteague" gives 128.128.16.221, etc.).
Unfortunately, we aren't automatically notified when new such hosts
are created, or when their IP addresses change. If you want to let us
know yourself, you can just send the host name(s) to usenet@mit.edu.
In any case, I've updated the configuration file so that all of the
mit.edu hosts at WHOI can now read and post news using news.mit.edu.
Since, as I understand it, WHOI is not part of MIT and we have some
commercial news subscriptions that are licensed only for MIT use, I
don't believe we're permitted to give news.mit.edu access to every
computer at WHOI. I think that the non-mit.edu computers there (and
probably the Athena workstations also) can access news from the server
netnews.whoi.edu. To use this instead, you'd probably need to type
setenv NNTPSERVER netnews.whoi.edu
before starting your newsreader program. You may find that gives you
faster response than reading the articles over the network from
Cambridge. If you'd like to try that, I'd suggest first making a safe
copy of your .newsrc file. The netnews.whoi.edu server won't have the
same article numbers as on news.mit.edu, and your newsreader program
will most likely need to change every line of .newsrc to work there.
