There are numerous bugs in the Sun xscreensaver. This one is probably
due to the fact that it's setuid so that it can read the shadow
password file, but doesn't give up its setuid status when it's done
doing that.
I can't fix the bugs until I have Kerberos rlogin access to a Solaris
machine.
