I agree that it shouldn't use xrdb -merge that way; the script I wrote
when I first installed it in outland was almost identical to what
Calvin used for the sipb locker. However, Calvin is right that the
app-defaults file needs to be run through cpp (that is, processed by
xrdb), or some other gross hack needs to be done, to handle the
color/monochrome differences. (X11r4 handles this in no way
whatsoever; X11r5 handles this in one of the most broken ways I can
possibly imagine. Both require the ability to modify the system
default files, which we can't do.) Modifying the C code to DTRT is
about the only choice; if you can, I'd be happy to see it (and the
author probably would too). Right now the way it handles the
situation by default is with command-line args -color or -mono and a
compiled-in default choice between these two settings.

Calvin: If you have the time and knowledge, go ahead and modify the
code to check the Visual, and then try a seperate version using the
XJets coverter, and then send both of them back to NCSA. (and, even
better, take a crack at integrating it into then 2.0 prerelease - code
(as-yet unmodified, since I just got it a couple days ago) is in
/afs/sipb/project/infoagents/src/xmosaic2)
